Nzimande launches hydrogen economy plan
The Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Blade Nzimande, on Thursday launched the first official roadmap to identify high-level outcomes for a South African hydrogen economy.
The Hydrogen Society Roadmap will serve as a national coordinating framework to facilitate the integration of hydrogen-related technologies in various sectors of the South African economy, thereby stimulating economic recovery in line with the Economic Reconstruction and Recovery Plan.
Nzimande said South Africa p 2% of the global demand for hydrogen, mostly made from natural gas by Sasol.
“Given the projected global demand for green hydrogen, South Africa has the opportunity to convert its current global supply to green hydrogen and the potential to increase the country’s share of the green hydrogen market,” Nzimande said.
