Stars, designers let go of reins

- Thato Mokhothu

Shwa is always out and about but she was not going to miss going out on the biggest weekend of all in Kwazulu-natal.

So, yours in gossip left the forever freezing Gauteng and took a much-needed sho’t left down to one of the warmest cities in the country, Durban.

Obviously, Shwa does not do things last minute, so I had to first enjoy the breathtaking coastal views, horse riding on the beach and cruising into the sunset in the tropical climes.

Anyways, before I knew it, it was Friday and the city was packed with Ford Rangers, Vianos and a whole lot of Gauteng number plates, showing that the ones with money had arrived, and wanted their presence to be felt.

This prestigious event was the biggest event since the country went mask free.

It had been held behind closed doors for the past two years because of the dreadful pandemic that felt like it would never end.

Hotels were packed to the point that we could have had our own after party there at the designated hotels.

I wonder how many marriages or relationships survived the anarchy Shwa witnessed in Durbs.

Last time we had an in-person event Somizi and Mohale were the “IT” couple and planning their wedding, which crashed in two seconds (somebody should have instituted a commission of inquiry into why a multimillion-rand wedding could flop in two seconds).

But remember, Shwa did say we needed closure. Well, the girl sort of did get that closure nyana seeing the two former lovers in the same marquee. Weird but fun for onlookers. Anyways, I’ll get back to that closure in a bit. When I arrived at the Greyville Racecourse it was already packed, the sun was out and it was basically painted in purple (because of the headline sponsor, of course). The event is not only about horses and celebrities coming out to show off their outfits, but there is also a competition for young designers. The event encourages those attending to push the boundaries of fashion, for them to reign freely and bring their most fantastical vision and outfit to life. Durban University of

Technology second-year fashion and textiles student Ismael Mchunu beat nine other participants, and walked away with the Hollywoodbets Durban July Young Designer Award. By the way, I was just walking past when I witnessed the competition trying to gain entry to the marquees I had access to. This year the theme was “Show Me the Honey”, which included a play on dripping gold, metallics, bling, and whatever honey means for everyone.

As you know, some people never listen and next time I think Shwa should provide a survival kit ahead of the event. I’m tired of having to write about some people’s not-so-sharp fashion sense, its exhausting, but hey, it’s my job.

I was walking around minding my own business when I spotted Mohale walking with some men who looked like bodyguards.

Perhaps the young fellow fears fisting. Phela, this was the first time he was going to be in the same place as Somizi.

I hate to be the one to say this, but the suit Mohale wore seemed too similar to the one he wore at his wedding (come out Mohale, did you want to remind your loud-mouth ex what he has been missing out on?) Anyways, Mohale arrived at the marquee that Somizi was hosting, with Somizi’s estranged friend Lasizwe, and I must say the atmosphere was awkward as hell.
