A red card to Mpengesi’s lack of vision

- Samuel Radebe Heilbron

When you mention the name Siviwe “Chippa” Mpengesi, every footballer giggles because his name is synonymous with the firing of coaches with gay abandon.

The trigger-happy Chippa United boss is infamous for running his team like the security company he used to own. Good examples of such coaches are the late Roger Sikhakhane and recently Dan Malesela. I’m sure Mpengesi’s club holds the record for sacking coaches since the advent of the PSL era.

It’s said that since 2012,

Daine Klate was the twenty-something coach to be dismissed by the Gqeberha-based outfit.

Orlando Pirates veteran Teboho Moloi can best describe the criterion used when they are about to sack you. He says you are invited to an evening meal with the CEO, then you are told the bad news. Unfortunately, the latest victim, Daine Klate, wasn’t given time to dine with club officials.

He was fired at midnight after suffering a narrow defeat against the Brazilians.

This reminded us of how

Jacob Zuma used to reshuffle his cabinet. This is the man who aspires to one day become the boss of the PSL and belong in the same league as Kaizer Motaung, Irvin Khoza and Patrice Motsepe.

Our league would be a mess. It’s time coaches get protected from such visionless club bosses. They must be made to pay those they sack the remaining years of their contracts. If it hits them hard in the pocket, then the coaches’ rights will be protected.
