More than 2000 running enthusiasts will line up the streets to celebrate the 10th edition of the Spar Thembisa Mile on Sunday at Moses Molelekwa Arts Centre next to Makhulong Stadium. The race starts at 7am.

The 1 Mile Race incorporates the Central Gauteng Athletics 1 Mile Championships for Boys and Girls Under 10, 13,15,19,1 Mile Walk and the Elite Mile.

A prize purse of R75000 will be on offer to the elite field. The men’s and women’s winners of the 10km race, which makes a comeback to the calendar after being cancelled due to Covid in 2020 and 2021, will each take home R5 000, while the winners of the invitational mile contests will take home R3000 each.

In addition, Spar vouchers will be given to the top three boys and girls in the U-10, U-13 and U-15 age groups in the mile. The race will run through the two main streets of Thembisa, namely RTJ Namane Drive (known as Straight Line) and Andrew Mapheto Drive.

“The race is more likely to affect the traffic flow on the day from 7am to 11am and we apologise for the inconvenience. We will also have 110 marshals and EMPD officers deployed at various junctions for runners’ safety and traffic control,” said race organiser Donald Mathipa.

Late registration and race number collection will take place at the venue from Friday until on the morning of the race. The entry fee is R150 for 10km and R50 for the 1 Mile Race.
