DEAR Edwin I’m considering buying a secondhand car. My options are the 2008 Hyundai Tucson, a 2010 Renault Scenic or Megane, a 2007 Toyota Verso, a 2009 to 2012 Chevrolet Cruse and a 2010 Ford Focus or Fiesta. What is the best option for me in terms of affordable car service, fuel consumption, stability and performance?

Collins Meetse Dear Collins Your final choice depends on your likes and budget. It is unfair pitting SUVs like the Tucson or Verso against the Cruse or the Ford Focus and Fiesta. I would give them all a miss and go for the Ford EcoSport, which is under R200 000 new, comes with all the mod cons and is friendly on the gas. The Tucson is almost seven years old. Age does matter when it comes to cars. The fueleconomical Ford EcoSport offers peace-of-mind motoring. Dear Edwin I drive a BMW 320i. I am left with six months to pay it off. I want to get a second car. Which one can I go for between the Mercedes CLA and Ford Ranger? I’m willing to pay about R7 000 without insurance.

– Carol Pitso Dear Carol Last October, the CLA topped one overseas readers’ poll as “the most beautiful car in the world ”. The CLA 180 starts at about R350 000 and costs about R7 400 a month. The Ranger 2.5 will not win any votes in the looks stakes, but starts at R184 200.
