THE ghost of retired Gauteng police head Lieutenant General Mzwandile Petros is haunting his former deputy, Major-General Phumuza Gela, who was demoted via SMS, apparently because he is too close to Petros”.

Petros retired last August after his contract was not renewed.

Two police sources told Sunday World that Gauteng commissioner General Lesetja Mothiba sent an SMS to Gela last Sunday, effectively demoting him.

The SMS read: I had a meeting with all the… personnel that report to you and have informed them that until further notice you are no longer the DPC [deputy provincial commissioner] for Operational Service and that with immediate effect they will report directly to me. I will be writing a letter to all stations. Mothiba.”

…Gela said: I can only confirm the SMS, but I will not comment any further.” He referred questions to the communications department.

Police spokesman Neville Malila said: It needs to be placed on the record that none of the deputy provincial commissioners was demoted at any stage as alleged in your enquiry. Gela is deputy provincial commissioner for visible policing and he is still responsible for such duties.

The acting commissioner is enjoying the support of his whole management team. [Petros] is in retirement and has no business with the… running of the SAPS.”

On Tuesday, after intervention from various sources, including national commissioner General Riah Phiyega, Mothiba reversed the demotion. Mzwandile kaBizokwakhe
