Stick to the rules

Anitha Ramduth writes: TO all those parents who park on the zebra crossing at Port Alfred High School – as you obviously are not aware, this is not a fancy road decoration or your very own special landing zone to park your bakkie or SUV, it is a pedestrian crossing for children!

As is the nature of a school, there are small children around and teaching them they can safely cross the busy street at the zebra crossing becomes pointless, when selfish and lazy parents would rather park on the zebra crossing, so their own little darlings only have to hop out their doors directly onto the paved paths.

Please consider our little darlings too, who now have to walk around your large vehicle onto the actual road. I have seen this happen almost every day, even when there is plenty of free parking available; parking a short distance away and letting your child walk the extra 20m will not hurt them. If you are that concerned about them getting to the school doors safely, then make the effort – get your lazy self out of your car and walk with them.

How can we raise our children to become responsible, rule-abiding members of society when we as parents blatantly disregard the rules ourselves and put other children at risk at the same time? Teach your children about road safety by making sure you practise it yourself!
