Horse action takes over Bathurst show

- LOUISE CARTER

YEE-HA! Round up your horses, boys and girls, the Bathurst Show is getting closer!

Lace your boots and get your saddles ready as the big and bold show kicks off this year from March 27-29. The horse section has a head start on March 26.

The horse show has been running for more than 50 years and always attracts riders from all over the Eastern Cape.

Chrissie Craddock, lady vice chairman of the Bathurst Agricultural Society (BAS) and horse section convenor said: “We are extremely grateful to Bathurst’s Historic Pig and Whistle Inn for enabling us to attract Bev Williams, an international showing judge.

“Williams and the Pig are responsible for a very generous sponsorship which has enabled us to bring her in from the Northern Cape. According to Williams, Bathurst is among her favourite shows,” Craddock said.

“Rugged Rocks holiday cottages have been loyal sponsors of the horse show for many years and how fitting that the Handleys’ daughters are competing in the show.” Beautiful Muriel Riding Wear have also supported the show by adding to the prize money on offer as well as donating gifts to all the grooms who work very hard over the show.

The horse section classes include the fancy dress competition which is always popular, and for the first time an exciting power jump event, both taking place on the Saturday afternoon.

The main arena will also feature displays organised by the BAS including the Grahamstown SAPS dog unit, and the wonderful collection of vintage tractors from the Bathurst Agricultural Museum next door.

There really will be something for everyone to enjoy this year.
