BORN and raised in Port Alfred, former PAHS headboy Silvanus Welcome has been making strides in his career, having been recently employed by Walter Sisulu University as director of institutional advancement.

The university has entrusted Welcome with the responsibility of turning things around for the better in relation to funding.

“I oversee alumni relations and donor relations,” Welcome said.

He explained that his core function was to enhance the third stream income of the university.

Understanding the role of external stakeholders, such as government, alumni and corporates, Welcome is of the view that building healthy and sustainable long-term relationships with the aforementioned entities can make his work a success.

“One of the strategies is to enhance our staff giving via payroll,” he said.

“The focus this year is around the centenary celebrations of Tata Mandela and uMama Albertina Sisulu, who both would have been 100 years old.”

Welcome said they would use Nelson Mandela’s years in the struggle for freedom as one of their key fundraising strategies for the year.

“Mandela was in the struggle for freedom for 67 years and we have encouraged staff to donate at least a minimum of R67 or R100, or an amount of their own choice that will go towards the Walter Sisulu Bursary Fund,” he said.

The university also welcomes public support.

“We also encourage the public to get involved in any way that will assist our students to further their education,” he said.

“They should, therefore, not hesitate to contact me on swel” Welcome was headboy at PAHS and matriculated in 2007.

PAHS still held a special place in his heart, he said.

He pursued his tertiary education at Rhodes University, where he completed a Bachelor of Social Science (law) and further obtained a Post Graduate Diploma with the Rhodes Business School.

Moreover, he stated that he was currently a Master’s in Business Administration student.
