KOWIE United rugby club’s first team was victorious in two recent clashes.

On July 21, the Kowie United beat Eastern Rugby Club 16-7 after trailing 7-6 in the first half, club president Leston Hilpert said.

Their goals came from the likes of Mason Brookes who scored two penalty conversions. Alvin Diedericks also booked his name on the score sheet.

Last weekend they played Swallows in Grahamstown where they achieved an even bigger victory of 63-10.

Putting their names on the score sheet were Mason Brookes who scored one penalty plus five conversions and two tries; Shane Swartz who scored two tries; Claude Marais two tries; captain Fazel Daniels one try, and Clayton Arends, Dayne Ruiters and Alvin Diedericks who had one try each.

Kowie United’s second team did not fare as well when they played Eastern Rugby Club, suffering a defeat of 15-5.

The first team is hoping to continue with its good form on Saturday (August 4) when they play Old Collegians at home.

Kowie United also has a netball team and the ladies will face BUCO.

“We are going to sell hamburgers and chips to assist with travelling cost for the next games” he said. He appealed for public support.

Hilpert acknowledged the vital role of sponsors for the team. “We want to thank Stenden University for transport,” he said.

“We also want to thank BUCO for sponsoring us with 50 T-shirts for warm up and sponsoring paint for the field markings for the whole year.”

Warm up T-shirts help the team when they do exercises just before the games kicks off.

Hilpert was also grateful to Shakatak who showed up when needed most. ”Shakatak sponsored us T-shirts during the 10 Tournament,” he said.

Other sponsors were JJ from Britto’s, Eldie Marais and Sasko.
