Boost for U17 football
Bathurst City winners of new league tourney
Ndlambe Local Football Association, in partnership with the department of sport, recreation, arts & culture, recently established an U17 league in their quest to promote football and get the youth participating in sport.
Khayalethu Ngangqu is the co-ordinator of the local U17 league programme.
On August 19, Marselle hosted the winner’s final games of the pre-season tournament that started at the end of July in different towns.
Bathurst was represented by Bathurst City FC, Alexandria by Rising Stars FC and Kenton and Marselle by Junior Sundowns FC.
Bathurst City FC were the winners, with Junior Sundowns FC coming second and Rising Stars FC third.
The league commenced last weekend, with the winner having a great opportunity to participate in an annual Engen Tournament held in Port Elizabeth, including Premier Soccer League junior teams.
This also presented an opportunity for local players as these teams are also scouting for talented youngsters.
“I hope this is the start of a long relationship as I would like to give an extra motivation to our already participating youth and those looking for a reason to play,” Ngangqu said.
PEDAL PROCEEDS: The Grahamstown to Sea (G2C) mountain bike race from Grahamstown to Port Alfred in July attracted more than 300 entries from across the Eastern Cape. The annual 58km event was sponsored by the Port Alfred and Grahamstown branches of Buco hardware merchants. The race proceeds were handed over last week to the beneficiaries – the Port Alfred and Grahamstown SPCAs. Seen at the handover of the cheque to Port Alfred SPCA were, from left, Lappies Labuschagne (owner of Cycle Asylum in Port Alfred and one of the organisers), Judy Horak (Port Alfred Buco), Margie Thomas and Sandra Pool (both of Port Alfred SPCA).
