Dassie debate a real problem
The pathetic ongoing debate between residents being plagued by dassie encroachment into their homes and the largely (one suspects) ecologically uneducated “bunny huggers” who simply dismiss that as a real problem, perhaps calls for some critical solutions.
Last week, “Let and let live” averred that we who have spent a lifetime saving for a retirement home in Ndlambe, should merely brush off the scampering, urinating, defecating animals in our ceilings because “They were here before us!”
They destroy our gardens and diminish the value of our homes. The biological fact is that these hyrax were not “here” before us. Their natural habitat is not in Smith or George streets. They belong on a rocky krantz, but have been allowed by the municipality to multiply indiscriminately within our town due to an absence of natural predators in this urban setting.
Written notification to the municipality has not even been acknowledged. So, what will eventually happen? Probably, as usual, despite the animals being “protected ”, aggrieved residents will finally be forced to surreptitiously solve the problem themselves – probably using inhumane methods – how sad and unnecessary. Our local Sunshine Coast SPAR give us the privilege of doing a trolley dash in aid of our very worthy Dolphin Coast Nursing Home.
We are very lucky to have this facility, a non-charitable organisation, on our doorstep.
