Lodge outside PA burns down in mystery fire
Swallow’s Rest Lodge just outside Port Alfred on the R67 towards Bathurst was gutted in a fire in the early hours of Sunday morning.
No one was in the house at the time and no one was injured in the blaze, owner Jennifer Nelson said. The fire started at about 1.30am.
Everything in the lodge was burnt.
“We don’t know yet what caused the fire. An inspector is coming out tomorrow,” Nelson said.
“The fire department’s response was excellent – they were here within minutes.”
Nelson said firefighters worked through the night and were still on site at about 12 noon on Sunday, extinguishing any smouldering embers and dousing the surrounding grass to prevent the fire from flaring up again.
On Wednesday morning, Nelson said the fire inspector had visited the premises on Tuesday and spent the whole day going through the gutted house to ascertain the cause of the fire.
“We’re still not sure,” she said. “The inspector will go through the photos to try and find the cause.”
