New Buco manager sets sights on the future

- ROB KNOWLES

Customer service is high on the agenda of the new man in charge of Buco’s Main Street branch, Gerhard van der Walt, and he intends to make the store more customer-focused.

“Where I came from, running the Witbank Buco branch, we had lots of competition and we all sold similar products at similar prices. What separated us from the rest was our attention to the needs of our customers,” said Van der Walt. “That means a new layout for the store and improving our sales and after-sales service.”

He said he and his family, wife Rozaan and children Kaylin and Logan, having travelled the 1,200km to get to Port Alfred, are happy they made the right move and look forward to becoming part of the community. “My wife and I wanted a better life for our two girls,” said Van der Walt.”

Asked for his first impressions of the store, he said he could see great potential for the future his job was to create a complete “customer experience, and that means friendliness and attention to service.

“People love the brand but, if we do not provide them with a better shopping experience they may go elsewhere. For example, there is only nine parking outside the store. We are a small rural town but we need to develop a big-town ethos.”

While van der Walt says he looks forward to enjoying all that Port Alfred has to offer, his primary focus is to put energy into improving the store and increasing its customers base. “Thank you all for the loyal support and I ask for patience during the next couple of months with all the changes,” he said. “It will all will be worth it.”
