Graeme College sports news

-

Graeme College were proud to host Gill College on Saturday, for one of Grame’s oldest rugby derby weekends.

Matches were played from u9 upwards, which means it is a very special fixture.

With the 1st XV participating in the Kingswood Colllege Rugby Festival, the Graeme 2nd XV took on the challenge to play the Gill 1st XV on the day. It was an exciting encounter which ended in a 17-17 draw. The Graeme 3rds also had a nail biter against the Gill 2nd XV, and snuck home wining by one point. Graeme seemed to dominate the rest of the fixtures ending the day with nine wins and one draw.

Graeme College played against Clifton College on the first day of the Kingswood College Rugby Festival. Graeme College made up a 9 point half time deficit to win the match 27-21.

Graeme would have been frustrated in the first half as they made a number of crucial errors in their own red zone which gifted Clifton numerous opportunities to score points. When Graeme did eventually get ball in their opponents half they

Our three Men’s teams came back from the All Cape with varied success. Jony Alexander, Roy Wilkens, Grumpy Enslin, Lennie Clark and Mike Ryan performed very well by coming second in their section Unfortunately they lost in the first round of the knock-out.

The other two teams skipped by Jacques Krige and Steve Minnaar had a good time without worrying the scorers too much.

With only 15 sections for the men and eight sections for the ladies these tournaments are battling to survive. The sad state of the economy and transportation costs mitigate against players being able to afford the time and finances to attend these tournaments. I can remember playing in a National in Cape Town where there were 50 sections.

Mike Ryan’s dad Paddy was a very popular member of our team – so much so that at the end of looked dangerous and scored on both occasions. Graeme trailed 12-21 at the break.

The second half belonged to Graeme as they spent near on the entire second half in their opponents half and managed to score three tries. The Graeme College backline was particularly threatening on a day where they found space in the wide channels. Graeme could not convert the tries, but the tournament we auctioned his braces.

I attended 17 Nationals and for the first seven we were four couples. Yes, we took our wives and had a most enjoyable time. We were not quite good enough to win our section but were runners-up three times.

To illustrate how fickle the gods of sport can be we played in a tournament in Durban where we lost two games won five easily and won five on the very last shot. The next year in Johannesburg playing with the same team we also lost two easily, won five easily and the lost five on the last shot.

The secret of these tournaments is not necessarily quality but rather compatibility. You can put four skips together in the same team and they might not do as well as a team composed of four leads playing for each other.

During a tournament like this the four players in a team spend more time together off the green than on the green. They will each have their own habits and idiosyncracies. Some smoke – others don’t. Some snore and must bunk in with the other snorers. Some like to have their drinks at the club – others like to relax at home with only the team Some do not drink at all and fret while they are waiting for the rest of the team. Remember you only have one car

On the green you must remember that normally at least one of you will have an off day Bear with him because tomorrow managed to win 27-21. It was a great result against a powerful Clifton side.

Try scorers: Thuso Mokhele, Simon Cowley, Lelona Xhaso and Yanga Bangisa x2. Lakhanya Sam x1 conversion.

Summary of results:

U9A won 48-0 U11B won 32-15 U11A won 12-0 U13A won 51-0 it might be your turn to have the off day.

Last week the curtain came down on another very successful Night Bowls Tournament. Sincere thanks to all who helped to run the tournament and to the competitors who also contributed to the enjoyment of the evenings.

Last Tuesday came with iffy weather and our leads stayed away but we still had some very competitive games with grades 3 and 4 having to lead. Eddie Hoseck, Keith Benson, and Ronel Roome went off with the boodle.

Thursday with more stable weather brought out the leads and we had a more normal distribution. It was left to John Hubbard, Peter May, and Andy Stuart to win the Mega Bucks.

On Saturday we were in competition with the Bathurst Show, the Ladies’ All Cape and a number of tired men still recovering from the All Cape. The Snowball was won.

Good Luck to our two ladies teams playing in the All Cape. Duties: Roll – Ronnie Smith, Mark – Rob Owsley/ Gary Everton, Tabs – Jonine McFarlane, Bar – Tony Brown.

The Kenton internal club competitions are now in full swing with matches being played throughout the week, all players are urged to schedule their outstanding matches and make sure the competition calendar is up to date.

Mike Palmer was the winner of last Friday’s attendance draw and pocketed R700 just for being there but his wife Lydia was much less fortunate, confidently picking out the wrong card in the Joker Jackpot. The Joker somehow manages to stay undercover but with a rapidly depleting pack, it’s surely just a matter of time before somebody finds him. Who knows it could be you, just make sure you get down to the club this Friday evening.

Thank you to Ken Nixon and Mike Palmer for your excellent service behind the bar last week.

The next round of the tremendously popular Dias Jackpot takes place on Wednesday afternoon and competition is keen with Rob Bowker and Stompie Bellingan leading the way and a host of eager bowlers snapping at their heels. Be sure to be there this week to make sure you stay in the running.
