April 2:

The first Tuesday of the month meant that it was monthly Medal day with the Patterson Cup at stake for the field of 24 ladies. The drizzle that fell at lunchtime had largely disappeared by tee-off time, but was replaced by an uncomfortable blustery wind. Pick n Pay sponsored the event which doubled with the first round of the Easter Shield.

The difficult conditions were evident in the results and the nett round of 75 by Gaby Hausman-Tarpani was sufficient to win the Silver Division after counting out Ronel Hough on the same score.

Sylvia Foster shot a nett 73 to win the Bronze Division and the Patterson Cup by counting out Maureen McGarvie into second place. The concomitant putting competitions held every Medal day were won by Ronel Hough (28 putts) and Liz Mangham (29 putts) in the Silver and Bronze divisions respectively.

There were no two-clubs during the afternoon but Linda Dobson made the shot of the day by acing a hole in one at the par three sixth.

The Longest drive competitions were held on the 16th and driven by Pogs Smith and Sylvia Foster in the lower and higher handicap sections respectively.

The competition on April 16 will be a better-ball Stableford sponsored by Ocean Basket.

Tuesday April 2:

The normal two-to-count Stableford alliance was the format on Tuesday with the application of the Portuguese Convention whereby three nett birdies or better on any hole received one bonus point. Thirty six players were drawn into nine four-balls.

Using this Iberian rule to their advantage, winners Johny Johnson, Dave Curran, Rusty Hallam and Dave Kirk carded a massive 99 points to outstrip the rest of the field. In fact runners-up Bob Shaw, Derek van Harmelen, Bryan Robinson and Steve Kennedy were all of 13 points behind on 86.

The balance of the field were all in arrears of these scores, the lowest being (1) Steve Daly, John Muggeridge, Andy Manson and Heinz Czepluch and (2) Neil Loundar, Paul Fryer, Len Bohnen and Martin Weaver, both covies carding 76 points to share the much to be avoided Hamer en Sukkel trophy at the 19th hole.

Par three birdies were holed by Derek Sinclair (sixth) and Gavin Richards (eighth). The best nett rounds were shot by Dave Kirk (64), on the eve of his return home to the UK, Dave Curran (68) and Jimmy van Rensburg (70).

A bit of drizzle around on Friday morning, not to everyone’s liking, limited the field to just 30 players, still a very good turnout considering the conditions. The rain did hold off for most of the morning although a light sprinkle towards the end did dampen the spirits and the clothing of a few.

Scores were generally low with the winners visitor Rose Andrew, Dave Rose and Nick Oosthuizen scoring 79 + 5 = 84 points. Gavin Richards, Jimmy van Rensburg, Bob Shaw and Heinz Czepluch occupied second position after carding 82 points.

The dreaded Hamer en Sukkel trophy adorned the 19th hole table of Andy Manson, Derek van Harmelen and Brian Reid after the hapless three-ball only managed to card a lowly 61 + 5 = 66 points.

There were no individual performances of note. Two-clubs were made by Rose Andrew (sixth), Ian Gatenby and Don Thomson (eighth).
