PORT ALFRED MIXED RESULTS

January 2

Eleven players took part in the first Port Alfred Mixed Competition of the year on Saturday morning. Glynnis Renecle, Nicholas Renecle, Jonathan Renecle and Derek Sinclair scored 84 points to win the competition. The runnersup place was taken by Nick Oosthuizen, Barry Brady, Len Bohnen and Heinz Czepluch who scored 81 points. Following closely behind, the longest walk, on 80 (75+5) points, was made by Fanie Smit, Derick van Harmelen and Heather van Harmelen. While there were no nett scores under 70, Derek Sinclair won a bottle of wine for being closest to the pin on the 8th.

KGB RESULTS

Friday January 1: The threat of early morning rain and a moderate south westerly wind did not deter the 18 players who entered the draw to play a Stableford Alliance 2-scores-tocount in six 3-balls.

Don Thomson, Quentin Hogge and Paul Fryer tied for first place with Martyn Weaver, John Abbott and Andy Barnes, both coveys coming home with 86 points. Len Bohnen, Andy Manson and Tom Tagg also tied with Mike Beaumont, Sylvia Foster and Graham Finlay to kick off the year sharing the dreaded Hamer en Sukkel on joint scores of 77 points.

Paul Fryer recorded the only 2club of the morning with a birdie on the par three 11th to take the carryover pool for his covey. Paul and Martyn Weaver also enjoyed their outing on an individual basis, both shooting good nett 68s. With round of the day, Sylvia Foster put all the males to shame with her excellent nett 66.

Tuesday December 22: The KGB’s final outing prior to Christmas saw 28 players drawn in seven 4-balls competing in a Stableford Alliance 2-scores-to-count competition among the visitors enjoying the course during their holidays.

A grey sky and intermittent drizzle cooled playing conditions somewhat but most found it heavy going as overnight rain had lessened run on the fairways and meant that balls finding the rough needed additional power to clear difficulty.

Winners on a respectable 87 points was the covey of Quentin Hogge, Bob Shaw, Andrew White and Eugene Erasmus. Bernie Loggenberg, Graham Finlay, Nick Oosthuizen and Heinz Czepluch finished second with 84 points. Definitely proving that the course was playing longer, Mark Warren, Russell Warren, Martyn Weaver and Andy Manson all suffered together, as they posted 71 points to claim the Hamer en Sukkel at prize giving without giving any other coveys an opportunity to join them.

No birdies on par threes were recorded and the 2-club pool was carried over.

Indicative of conditions, no individual players stood out with notable scores on the morning.
