wedges. It must rank as one of the richest milkshakes in town – a decadent pleasure.

Burksies also has regular milkshakes in the strawberry, bubblegum, chocolate, banana, lime and salted caramel flavours.

The Bean Tree at Rosehill SuperSpar has double thick milkshakes in the following flavours: strawberry, lime, banana, cookies and cream, bubblegum, salted caramel, rum and raisin, chocolate and coffee.

Having already had their salted caramel before, which is superb, I tried the strawberry. It was deliciously thick – you know it’s good when you struggle to suck it through the straw and have to resort to the spoon.

At Judy’s Kitchen I was served an iced coffee, very artfully presented with a crunchie on the side and some coffee beans for decoration. It was creamy and refreshing, an alternative to a hot drink on a warm summer’s day and a lighter alternative to a milkshake.

Their iced coffee can also be requested in hazelnut, vanilla and caramel flavours.

Tahoe Spur wanted me to try their vanilla custard banana treat, a new item on the menu. You can have it with cream or ice-cream. I opted for cream.

The trick is to mix the crushed wafers together with the custard and cream to enjoy the full, rich flavour. Don’t try to use a straw.

Their milkshake flavours are Bar One, Oreo, vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, bubblegum, banana and lime.

KC Italia at the Postmaster’s Village had me try both their iced tea Italiano and their affogato.

The Italian-style iced tea is honey and orange spiced tea, with cardamom, star anise and cinnamon.

It is very refreshing, a lighter option after the rich dairy products.

Co-owner Kirsten Penn said it was ideally made the day before serving.

The affogato is a strong Italian espresso poured over a rich vanilla ice cream. It is nice to sip slowly, a calming drink.

KC Italia also offers soft drinks and lime and soda.

Penn said in these lean times, it made a difference when customers ordered a drink with their meal, and this was echoed by other restaurateurs in that regard.

Ocean Basket offers the following mocktails: strawberry daiquiri, cosmopolitan, mojito and pina colada.

I had the cosmopolitan, which is comprised of cranberry syrup, lime juice and triple sec, garnished with strawberry and lemon slices. It was sweet and refreshing.

Niche Café had me try their homemade lemonade, which comes with blueberries, mint and lemon slices.

It’s very refreshing and you’ll want to fish out the blueberries which seem to find homes in the hollow ice cubes.

Also at Niche, I had their chocolate brownie milkshake, made with their own decadent crushed brownies, ice cream, cream and a little toffee taste.

It’s mouth-wateringly delicious and like any good double thick shake, it’s hard to suck through a straw. It comes with a brownie on the side for good measure.

Rise Café pushed my limits by having me sample three of their drinks: the homemade lemon iced tea, their Sober Sunday mocktail and their honeycomb milkshake.

The iced tea is a rooibos infusion with a dash of apple juice and honey.

It’s ideal if you want something cool and refreshing and not overwhelmingly sweet.

The Sober Sunday is comprised of a half tot of lemon juice, grenadine and lemonade.

It has a lovely fresh effervescence and is beautifully presented.

The honeycomb milkshake contains Ovaltine, ice cream and homemade honeycomb. It’ sa decadent delight, the honeycomb melting in your mouth. You’ll need a spoon to get to the good bits at the bottom of the glass.

My tasting adventure ended at C’est la Vie, where I chose a lime milkshake.

It comes with marshmallows and crushed green smarties and has a lovely fresh taste.

Other flavours available are chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, banana and coffee.
