LADIES’ RESULTS January 19

Twenty-seven brave ladies took part in the Pick n Pay 3-Ball Alliance on Tuesday afternoon, playing in gale-force winds.

Trish Barwick, Maureen McGarvie and Joy Altson won the competition with 42 points and counted out Sandy Thompson, Shirley Heny and Sonia Reynolds, who also scored 42 points, into second place.

Third place was taken by Jenny Ralph, Jenny Adair and Sandy Fryer, also on 42 points but who were, in turn, counted out by the runners-up.

Rouxle Hattingh was nearest the pin on the eighth, where she also sank the only two club of the day. None of the ladies managed to reach the green on the 11th hole.

The longest drive on hole three was won by Kim Gardner in the 021 handicaps division and Rouxle was longest in the 22-onwards division.

The Ladies’ Competition, on February 2, is a WGSA Medal and Putting competition (done as a draw).

PORT ALFRED MIXED RESULTS January 23

An almost windless morning greeted the 22 players who took part in Saturday morning’s Port Alfred Mixed Competition, with the wind coming up later to provide slight relief from the hot, humid conditions.

Winning the competition with a score of 91 points (86+5) were Heinz Czepluch, Tony Halse and Pat Halse, who took home vouchers from Spur.

The runners-up were Fanie Smit, Brian Reid, Margie Reid and Maureen McGarvie, who scored 89 points.

Taking the longest walk with 77 points were Yvonne Hill, Rick Hill, Martyn Weaver and Marlene Gibson.

Tony Halse had the best nett of the day with 68 points and won a voucher from Fishaways.

His good score was closely followed by those of Tim Shanks, Pat Halse and Heinz Czepluch, who all scored 69 nett.

Heinz was nearest the pin on the eighth and holed his second for a two-club, however, Pat Halse and Maureen McGarvie also managed two-clubs on the eighth.

KGB RESULTS Tuesday January 19

Just a hint of a south-easterly wind at the beginning of the morning that turned into a rogue southwesterly as the morning progressed, saw 41 players drawn in eight 4-balls and three 3-balls to play in a Stableford Alliance 2scores-to-count competition.

The 3-ball consisting of John Crandon, Dave Curran and Heinz Czepluch took no prisoners, posting a superb 95 (90+5) points to take first position.

Three 4-balls comprising Andy Manson, Hein Barnard, Ross Grainger and Paul Fryer; Tony Halse, John Abbott, Bob Shaw and Quentin Hogge; as well as Andrew White, Rick Hill, Guy Cash and Graham Finlay, all finished on 89 points to share second position.

Richard Farndell, Martyn Weaver and Andy Barnes took pride in securing the Hamer en Sukkel with 80 points.

James Lobban birdied the par three eighth but his effort was overcome by Bernie Loggenberg, who likewise birdied the sixth to claim the 2-club pool.

Notable individual performances included Andy Manson with a nett 70, Hein Barnard and David Groenewald both with a nett 69, Russell Warren with a nett 68, John Crandon with an excellent nett 66, and Bob Shaw with the round of the morning of a nett 65. Bob rounded off his limelight performance as the only player to shoot a sub 80 gross, coming home with 76 gross, close but not quite beating his age!

Friday January 22

A healthy 48 players entered the draw to play a Stableford Alliance 2-scores-to-count a la Portuguese.

The hot day saw a light southerly switch to a mild easterly.

Tony Halse, Pat Halse, Rick Hill and Brian Shirley stormed into the clubhouse on 99 points to finish in first position.

Berny Loggenberg, David Groenewald, Russell Warren and Phillip van der Byl must have had great expectations as they came in close to the end of the field, but found that their 97 points could only give them second position.

Kevin Penrose, Barrie Brady, Guy Cash and John Abbott, not realising their expectations, came home with 78 points to claim the Hamer en Sukkel.

Pat Halse birdied the par three eighth, Bob Shaw did likewise on the par three but taking all claims to the 2-club pool, however, Jenny Ralph eagled the par four fifth hole for her 2-club to take the spoils for her covey.

Notable individual rounds included John Ralph and David Groenewald, both on 70 nett, Berny Loggenberg with 69 nett and Jenny Ralph, Tony Halse, Pat Halse, Rick Hill, Russell Warren and Steve Kennedy all on the most popular nett score of the day of 68. Shaun Uys took individual honours with his 67 nett.
