Farmers support BAS at auction
Good turnout sees the bidding fast and furious
With renewed restrictions by government during the Covid-19 second wave, the Bathurst Agricultural Society was recently forced to cancel the 2021 Bathurst Show, as it did last year.
The BAS committee is looking for new ways to generate funding.
One way is in conjunction with long-time partners in the cattle auction field.
Hobson & Co have been conducting cattle auctions for years, generating as much revenue as possible for the seller and ensuring a reasonable price for the buyer.
Last Thursday was no exception, when a major cattle auction was conducted at the Bathurst Showgrounds.
About 100 farmers arrived to either sell or buy cattle, all observing Covid-19 precautions and maintaining social distancing. Some sellers who did not normally sell at auction brought their animals specifically to help boost BAS’s coffers.
BAS president Danny Wepener was very pleased with the turnout, as well as the number of people who participated in the auction.
“BAS wants to express its heartfelt thanks to all the sellers and buyers, as well as Hobson & Co for a very successful cattle auction,” said Wepener.
“A total of 208 cattle were sold and prices were very good, with some of the top quality animals put up for auction.”
The cattle were led into the pen to be sold one-by-one, or as a group.
Bidding was fast and furious and the buyers quickly established the animals they wanted to purchase.
“An amount of R45.16 per kilogram was paid for a group of weaners belonging to Rob Cunnngham,” said Wepener, adding that this was a new record for the sale of beef and congratulating Cunningham on the sale.
Fat cows went for between R20 and R23 per kilo.
“Thank you all for supporting the Bathurst Show,” said a delighted Wepener.
