Prepare for your financial future

- Nico Human

I am certain every person want to look forward to a financially secure future, but how does one ensure the achievement of this goal?

First, one should understand exactly what a secure financial future entails.

A secure financial future could be summed up in a few words: “If one could maintain one’s current lifestyle after retirement.”

Unfortunately, statistics show us that only about 6% of the South African population will be able to achieve this.

What then will happen to the remaining 94%?

I can assure you the bulk of the remaining 94% are going to be forced to make serious re-adjustments to their lifestyles. Unfortunately, a huge number of that remainder will be forced to live off a state pension, which is about R1,800 per month. How on earth is it possible for anyone to survive on such an income?

I don’t want to make it sound like absolute “doom and gloom”, but unless some rather serious plans of saving are put in place, that is what it will amount to in many instances.

The only way to prevent this from happening is to put a rather serious savings plan into action as soon as possible.

The question of “how much do I need to save” will certainly crop up.

As previously mentioned, each person’s needs are absolutely unique and thus each person’s retirement planning should be a separate exercise.

There is no “one fits all” recipe in this regard.

But how then can anyone establish their exact need?

This can only be established by using rather complicated formulas and calculations and only qualified retirement planning experts should be entrusted herewith. A small calculating error can have devastating effects on the final outcome, many years down the line. At that stage it will most probably be too late to try and rectify the mistakes.

It is thus extremely important that these calculations should only be left to an honest, trustworthy and qualified person.

Many people may argue that it is already too late to make a difference, but I can assure you that it is much better to have saved up a few hundred thousand Rand, than nothing at all. The saying “better late than never” can be appropriately applied under these circumstances.

Don’t be the person who says, “I wish I did”.

For your own sake and that of your spouse or partner, establish a relationship with a financial planner and get them to assist you with a proper retirement plan to ensure as of as stressfree a retirement as possible.
