Criminals in apparent xenophobic attack captured by community

Protesters want court to refuse bail for two

- ROB KNOWLES

Zama Zama community members protested outside the Port Alfred magistrate’s court on Wednesday to urge the court to deny bail to two men who were captured by the community while in the process of robbing a foreign-owned store.

Four men were apparently involved in robbing a store and holding the occupants captive, stabbing the shop-owner in the abdomen. The community members managed to capture and restrain two of the men but two managed to escape and are still at large.

“We will not tolerate this sort of attack on a foreignowned business,” said the area’s CPF chair, Bonakele Moyikwa.

“The same colour blood flows through our veins. Violence against anyone must be prevented and foreign members of our community are entitled to the same rights as everyone else.”

Community leader Xolani Elvis Mguzulwa was at the protest and echoed Moyikwa’s comments. “The community must stand together to prevent violent attacks,” he said.
