Talk of the Town

Port Alfred Bowling Club

-

The bounce boys had an outing at the Port Alfred Ski-boat Club on Friday where they enjoyed a fish and chips lunch.

Special mention must be made of Tony Versveld who, due to illness, can no longer play bowls.

Tony was one of the founders of the bounce game some 15 to 16 years ago and was driven to the venue by his old mate, Jim Trustcott.

The Kekkel en Kraai-sponsored tabs-in on Tuesday afternoon was won by this scribe, Joan and Bill, with a shot profit of plus 15. All walked away with a chicken.

The women’s senior singles final will be played between Joan Jacobs and Rosemary Wood this Saturday.

Reaching the final, Joan beat Helise and Rosemary beat Eulali last Wednesday afternoon. Well done ladies.

This week saw the Vroom and Timm Cups evolved over the years.

In the 1960s to ‘80s, bowls was growing and there were many more clubs than there are now vying with each other to raise funds. The obvious solution was to stage a “one-day social”.

Indeed, at one stage if you started from Hospital Hill in Johannesburg you could, within 10km, play at a different club social every day of the year, except on Christmas and Easter.

Here in the Eastern Areas we had seven clubs and they each got a share of the cake.

They spaced their one and two-day events among the days that were available.

Port Alfred Club ran the first two-day social after World War 2. The clubs did not serve lunch being played Port Alfred vs Kowie at Port Alfred BC on Wednesday, while on Tuesday, the club’s drawn mixed trips was done and dusted with some good bowls played.

The results will be in next week’s column. The planned turnabout party is set for this Friday at 7pm. The women are running about searching for pants, belts and hats, while the men are searching for wigs, bras and balloons. If you don’t want to cross-dress, come support the club.

All are encouraged to bring friends to what promises to be an evening of laughs and fun along with Brenda and her Bandits.

A reminder to Jim and Julie that they are on bar duty on May 4 and 8. Good bowling to all.
