Talk of the Town

To confess your sins is to seek forgiveness

- Pastor Theo Snyman - Quotations from New International Version

The final words spoken by someone who is about to pass away is not only precious to the hearer but may be of great significance…a concluding message for all to remember.

When the Lord Jesus Christ was crucified, He said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing” (Luke 23:34).

This prayer of the Lord Jesus was not only for those who drove the nails through His hands and feet or for the throng of onlookers, but for each one of us individually. It was not only for their sins that He was nailed to the cross, but for ours as well!

“We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all” (Isaiah 53:6).

The prayer of Jesus still reverberates in the heavens for every single human being on the face of the earth, for no one has ever been able to say that they have never sinned.

“He who conceals his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy” (Proverbs 28:13).

God’s mercy triumphs over His judgement, for 1 John 1:9 says: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”

“Blessed are they whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord will never count against him” (Romans 4:7, 8).

This is a privilege beyond measure.

There are still many who have not experienced the blessedness of forgiveness, by confessing their sins and receiving the Lord Jesus as their Saviour.

As we celebrate the upcoming Easter weekend, may the prayer of Jesus be effective in every one of our lives - “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”
