NEW X-RAY FACILITY FOR RHODES

-

Rhodes University has officially unveiled its state-of-the-art X-ray facility which will better prepare its science students for possible future professions.

The ceremony was attended by Professor Sizwe Mabizela (Vice-Chancellor), Prof Peter Clayton (Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Research and Innovation), Prof Tony Booth (Dean of Science), Prof Makaiko Chithambo (Head of Physics and Electronics) and Dr Vincent Smith and Prof Rui Krause (Chemistry lecturers). Smith stated that the new instrument is useful in quite a diverse area in geology, physics, biochemistry, pharmacy and chemistry. He added that Rhodes will be using the instrument for basic research and to train postgraduate and undergraduate students. Mabizela believed that the newlyacquired equipment will further increase the research calibre and capabilities of the university and the knowledge of students who will go out into the world to make it a better place.

MIXED FORTUNES AT FESTIVAL

Makhanda schools’ 1st teams got off to a rather shaky start at the Grey High School

rugby festival in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) on Thursday and Saturday last week, but came back strongly on day-two with two of the teams emerging victorious. On day-one, Graeme College 1sts were defeated 8-24 by Rondebosch Boys’ High School, Kingswood College 1sts went down 7-19 to Michaelhouse College, and St Andrew’s College 1sts lost 5-42 to Diocesan College Bishops. Day-two of the festival saw Graeme beating Despatch High School 15-0, Kingswood losing 7-21 to Westville Boys’ High School and St Andrew’s narrowly beating Michaelhouse 17-15.

FUN AND GAMES UNDER LIGHTS Who will ever forget those warm summer evenings when the Grahamstown Bowling Club hosted its annual night bowls league, when participants wore clothing of all colours and styles, and when they munched their burgers and chips, and downed their favourite beverage while bowling on the immaculately-prepared greens. Supporters did likewise on the banks, shouting words of encouragement at the same time.

The league has been billed as Makhanda’s big social-cum-sporting event of the year. Whereas weekend club bowls adheres to certain rules, it’s far more relaxed at night bowls.

However, there is one rule that is not relaxed - footwear may be of any colour or style, but they must not have heels that dig into the greens. There’s another no-no, and that is wrong bias, which may be frowned upon by teammates.

After a break of two years, the Pepper Grove Pick n Pay inter-company night bowls league is back, and is due to be played from April 25 to May 20, with

three players making up a team, and entry limited to 48 teams.

In the past there have been some unusual and original names given to teams, like Pheasant Pluckers, Angels Forever, Operational Rats, Incredabowls, Fizix and Valley Crusaders, while businesses and institutions that have entered teams on a regular basis have included Makana Brick, GBS Mutual Bank, Carara, Pick n Pay and Settler City Toyota. Closing date for entries is April 19 or once 48 teams have entered, whichever comes first. Event secretary June McDougall is accepting entries on 083 376 4175 or at june.mcdougall@gmail.com
