Blustery, cold weather no match for fine bowling in Kenton competition

- BRIAN McLEAN

The Peg and Horace Purdon Competition was played at Kenton last Thursday with the players welcomed with great hospitality but also terribly cold weather and wind.

However, the foul weather did not stop some fine bowls being played, with the two Port Alfred men teams – Phil (skip), Mike and Bill and Ben (skip), Peter and Bill both winning.

Phil’s team beat Kenton A, while Ben’s beat Kowie A. Well done guys.

The Port Alfred ladies were not as fortunate, with both going down.

Joan (skip), Beryl and Ilsa lost to Kenton A while Mary (skip), Julie and Anna came well short against Kowie A.

In mentioning Julie, her partner Jim recently flew to Scotland to visit family, only to suffer a mild heart attack and having stents inserted. We are all glad the Scotsman survived.

The final of the novice singles saw Joanne playing against Anna last week, with the result to be mentioned in the next column.

Recently, the Personal Trust-sponsored trips were played on a Tuesday with Rosemary’s side of Boela and Peter walking away with top honours.

Then this past Saturday, the Build It-sponsored afternoon was staged with Rosemary again winning along with Rory.

Second were Boela, Debbie and Magriet.

Well done and thanks again to Build It for coming aboard.

Also this past Saturday, Brian, Mary and Elzabe spent Saturday afternoon playing at the Kowie Bowling Club, where a Pam Goldingsponsored tabs-in event took place, followed by a talk on mental skills by psychologist Greg Wilmot (son of Bugs Wilmot).

The teams were drawn by individual players and Elzabe was in the team skipped by Judy, the Eastern Areas president, who were placed third.

A reminder to newer bowlers: It is regarded as poor sportsmanship when player A claps when an opposition bowler knocks up one of his own team’s bowls into the head. Otherwise, good bowling to all.
