Festive end to croquet tournament

- BRIAN McLEAN

Despite all the croquet being played at the club when the Eastern Cape Classic was staged last week, bowlers were still able to play on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday afternoon.

On Tuesday, the Radue-sponsored event took place with Trevor, Collette, Fred and Anna walking away with first prize. Elzabe’s team earned second place, also winning vouchers while Lynda’s side were excited to win a bottle of wine each. Many thanks to the sponsor and well done to the winning teams.

The club’s drawn mixed trips gets played soon while today, another round of the Colleen Timm and Moore Shield gets played at Kenton. Here’s wishing all Port Alfred teams a successful afternoon.

Meanwhile, the first round of the Eastern Areas Trips is down for May 21, 22 at the Port Alfred Club and players are reminded to organise their respective teams and enter them soon.

Another guide for beginner bowlers and if you are a lead. Unless you are playing pairs, don’t go into the head if any measuring is taking place. Instead, move those woods which are well outside the measuring area.

In mentioning croquet, the tournament was a complete success with players from all over the country competing. A huge amount of organising went into it, the highlight being last Saturday when the finals were played followed by the prizegiving.

After the prizegiving, the croquet players were entertained by Brian and the Mallets (Wim, Carl and Roger) with Brian miming a couple of songs.

When the last of them, Sweet Caroline, was sung, the hall came alive with clapping and dancing followed by more dancing. A wonderful evening was had by all.
