Talk of the Town

BOWLS BANTER

-

The biggest event this week was the Kenton vs Kowie competition that was played at Kenton on Thursday afternoon. Our ladies teams went down 4-2 and our men's teams went down 8-0. All matches had their moments and the bowlers enjoyed themselves and the eats provided with some liquid refreshments afterwards. Tabs in on Wednesday was well supported but the weather got the better of most on Saturday and only a handful turned out to play in the strong westerly that was blowing. Nevertheless those that were present had some good hard fought matches.

The internal competitions are making good headway in some sections and quite a few matches were played this week. The final PT Lockdown Meat draw was done on Friday evening and the winner for the second time this month was Marietjie Copeman. Please get your entries in for the next month's draws if you want to take part in them.

The novice competition will be taking place over the weekend of May 14 and 15 and markers will be required for the matches so if you are willing to help please put your name down on the list at the club.

The week started on a high note with an excellent turn out on Tuesday afternoon. Playing in perfect weather on perfect greens, the Spar sponsored tabs in competition was won by David Freeme, Wendy Heny and Patrick Smith.

Freedom day on Wednesday morning, was enjoyed by a handful of our club members. We had an informal tabs in competition of 4-3-2-1 where three games of trips and two games of pairs was played. After 16 ends, the eventual winners of the morning, were Michael vd Sandt, Megan Kriel and Mike Ryan.

After the prizegiving, which was a huge slab of chocolate each for the winners, a bring and braai was thoroughly enjoyed under the old wild fig tree braai area. Thanks to Dave Thomas for organizing the event and handing over the prizes. Thursday afternoon saw 7 teams invade the Kenton Bowling Club, to compete in the 2nd round of the Bess Tweedie (Ladies)and the Kowie vs Kenton (Mens) competitions.

Results:

The Kowie ladles won two of their three games, drawing level pegs with Kenton at 6 points each. However, Kowie have a shot difference of +11 over their adversaries.

After a couple of noticeable come backs by the Kowie teams during the afternoon, the four Kowie teams made a clean sweep, and won all of their games. This puts Kowie well in the lead on 14 points with a shot difference of +55. Kenton have 2 points and a shot difference of -55.

The absence of the teams that went through to Kenton, did not deter the rest of the club having a whole lot of fun at the tabs in competition. The winning team and bragging rights for the afternoon went Lenny Clark and his team of Andre Laas and the very talented novice, Jacques Moolman.

As the Premier league competition on Friday afternoons is a thing of the past, a couple of members came out and played a "bounce" game. It was an enormous pleasure to see the legendary Rob Owsley handing in his tab for the afternoons competetition after having been ill for some time. Welcome back Rob.

For the record, Foxy's team of Pieter Stegmann, Andrew Meyer and Leon Evans won the afternoons proceedings, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. If this wasn't enough bowling, Saturday saw 14 teams of trips participate in the last tabs in competition for the week. In perfect Eastern coast sunshine weather, the eventual winning team was that of Jason Prince and his team of John Hubbard and Rob Turner
