Park renewal project draws partners together

- STAFF REPORTER

Ndlambe Municipality has welcomed the civic centre and library park renewal project initiated by the Port Alfred Ratepayers and Residents Association.

Driving the project, has been Parra vice-chairperson Lindsay Luppnow.

In a post on Parra’s website, she said: “With our increasing membership and support from the community, Parra decided it was time to initiate its first community project for the year.

“We have undergone a rebranding exercise and with that there has been an increased injection of enthusiasm, support and funding.

“We have a strong working relationship with Sunshine Coast Tourism and the Port Alfred Business Forum, who had already undertaken an improvement at the play park next to the Civic Centre a few months back.

“Parra accordingly decided to take care of another section of the park and the Port Alfred library as the next phase.”

Parra drafted a proposal and submitted it to council for approval. Any improvements, changes, or additions in public

spaces require official approval from the local authority, or legal liability could be passed on to the person or entity who attends to these without consent.

Ndlambe spokesperson Cecil Mbolekwa confirmed that this consent was in place.

“All applications were received and authorised,” Mbolekwa said.

“The work done by Parra is commended and we have been working for the last few months

closely with Lindsay and her team and look forward to the next phase[s] of the initiative.”

The work done at the library and civic centre was in addition to scheduled maintenance (grass cutting, weeding, cleaning) of public green spaces within the Ndlambe municipal area, Mbolekwa said.

The Parra project started on Wednesday May 11.

“This is where our amazing community really showed up,”

Luppnow said. “What we were able to achieve in three days is only because of the incredible people and businesses in this town who supported and donated towards making our town that bit better.”

Parra made special mention of the following people and businesses which supported them in the project:

Dave Elm – tree felling and cartage

Nathan Hilpert – labour and painting of pots and balustrades
