BOWLS BANTER

Kowie Bowling Club

With last weeks hectic schedule behind us, and a lot of club members away on short getaways, out of town tournaments, (Hofmeyr mixed classics/SA women’s nationals open singles) and others not feeling well, Tuesday saw only a handful of members enter the tabs in competition. Like all our competitions at the club, it’s not always the quantity of players but the quality, which is the telling factor. After making a noticeable comeback after the usual tea break, Wendy Heny and her team of Mike Ryan and “MJ” de Speville

took the afternoon’s spoils and bragging rights. Wednesday’s Novice session welcomed two new prospective members. Paul Ward, who has relocated from East London, and Ruth Walker, who has decided to play again after a sabbatical break.

Playing in balmy weather, and on beautifully prepared greens, Thursday’s tabs in was won by Jack Wiid and his team of Rob Walker and Leigh Evans.

With the cancellation of the monthly Personal Trust Trips, it was decided that an informal bounce/tabs in competition would be played on Friday afternoon. It turned out to be a fun-filled afternoon, and the outright winners were Cyprian Guard and his team of Colleen Davy, Leigh Evans and Louise Fleming.*

Saturday afternoon saw only a handful of members putting their tabs in. The winning team was Piet Boshoff and his team of Gill Armstrong and Pee Wee Tomlinson.

Congratulations is in place for Jackie and Megan Kriel who won all their first round games at the SA Women’s Nationals open singles. Unfortunately both were outplayed in the rounds that followed.

This coming week’s programme is a full once again. We have the Timm Cup on Wednesday afternoon, and also the third round of the Friday Nite bowls to look forward to.

Port Afred Bowling Club

There was a sad moment last Saturday before tabs-in when the club’s flag was flown at half mast out of respect for the passing of Richard Henshall who had suffered greatly before passing away last week.

Richard was a great and loyal club member who will always be remembered. Rest in peace our friend.

Every week there’s something going on in the bowling world. The good part is that the opening round of the club’s ladies’ senior singles took place last Wednesday and the bad part was that the senior singles final between Trevor and Brian, set for the same day, was delayed. Brian had developed a slight cold while Trevor had contracted Covid.

More bad news. Both men’s teams plus one ladies team lost when playing in the Colleen Timm and Moore Shield at Kenton last Thursday. In addition, the bottom toilets at the club were damaged after being broken into and even worse for the club, Eddie Senar is set to relocate somewhere in the Cape, while Neil de Villiers leaves soon to live in East London. In Kenton, Trevor’s team of Phil, Peter and Brian came a cropper against Kenton B, losing by three shots while Port Alfred A, skipped by Hein, went down 27-15 to Kowie B.

The Port Alfred ladies’ team skipped by Elzabe along with Joan, Mary and Joanne were well beaten by Kowie A but a very well done to Lynda (skip), Collette, Anna and Louise for winning their game.

Kenton Bowling Club

On Wednesday afternoon the next round of the Dias Jackpot took place at the club and the winners on the day were Rodney Austin, Peter Levey and Elma Britz. Thanks to Dias Insurance for the prizes and to Tony Usher for joining us at the club for the prize giving afterwards.

Friday night was a bit subdued but the winner of the PT Lockdown Meat Draw was Neville Emslie. Congrats Neville, your voucher is waiting for you at Kenton Butchery.

Saturday Tabs in was sponsored by Kenton Garden Services and the winners were Bill Bedford, Dave Sterling, Corrine Brown and Elma Britz. Bill was over the moon with joy and told everyone entering the club house that his name was going to be in the newspaper. Thanks to Kenton Garden Services for sponsoring the event.

The big event of the weekend was the Novice singles championship. Eleven ladies in 3 sections started on Saturday and the three winners of the sections played it out on Sunday. Novice ladies champion is Lynn West and the runner up is Rose Catto.

In the men ’ s competition 2 sections of 4 competed on Saturday with the sections winners playing in a final on Sunday afternoon. The winner here after a tense game of 29 ends was Peter Levey and the runner up was Jerry Catto. Thanks must go to the organisers and to all the markers who gave up their time to make this a great tournament.

A reminder that this week we have the PT Trips taking place on Friday so make sure your teams are entered for it.
