KENTON BOWLING CLUB

Wednesday Tabs saw the next round of the monthly Continental Restaurant competition taking place. A large turnout played on a lightning-fast B green and the overall winners were Wickus van Schalkwyk, Dave Sterling and Ian Smith. Each of them received a voucher to spend at the Continental Restaurant, for which we thank Eugene and his team very much.

Wednesday also saw the installation and final commissioning of our new electric motor, pump and spray nozzles for irrigating the greens. The older motor and pump had suffered a catastrophic failure some weeks ago and the spray nozzles on the greens also had to be replaced as they had been damaged over the years by pressure problems. It looks like everything is working to the satisfaction of Rodney again so we look forward to many years of trouble free watering.

The PT Trips that were due to be played on Friday afternoon had to be postponed due to the wonderful rain we got on Thursday and Friday. We measured almost 50mm and it seems to have been pretty widespread throughout the area and no doubt brought much needed relief to farmers. The PT Trips will now take place on Friday May 27 and we want to see all the teams there for it. Carl Vermeulen can also make it, for which we are very happy.

A few of us got together at the club late on Friday afternoon to have a drink or two with Carl who had come up for the Trips. The Lockdown Meat draw was done and the winner was the man himself, Carl Vermeulen. He ’ ll be able to enjoy his purchase with his voucher next week. There is just one draw left this month so remember to get your entries in for the June draws. Cost of entry is R100 and that gets you a chance each Friday of that month to get your number drawn and to win the weekly R100 voucher at Kenton Butchery.

This weekend sees the start of the Eastern Areas Trips competitions at Port Alfred Bowls Club. We have two ladies’ and two men's teams taking part and we wish them all the best as they strive to bring the silverware home.

KOWIE BOWLING CLUB

This week’s bowling at the Kowie club started on a high note on Tuesday afternoon. Although there are still a lot of members away due to sickness and travels, an enthusiastic bunch competed for the bragging rights of the day. The honours went to Pieter Stegmann and his team of Gary Everton and Bugs Wilmot. Wednesday’s novice session was well supported and it goes without saying, a lot of fun was had by all who participated. Wednesday afternoon saw two competitions being played by our members at the Port Alfred Bowling Club.

In the third round of the Vroom Cup, our Kowie ladies were outplayed in both their games this week, by their feisty opponents from Port Alfred. The current standing on the leaderboard is Port Alfred on 8 points, with a shot difference of 17, and our girls are on 4 points with a shot difference of -17.

In the third round of the men’sTimm cup competition, our Kowie teams were unstoppable, and dominated three of the four games that were played. The leaderboard shows that Kowie have 20 points now, and a shot difference of 120 shots. Port Alfred are on 4 points with -120 shot difference.

Thursday’s tabs in was played in overcast weather, with threats of big rains sending us all home at any moment, to enjoy a cup of Milo with our families. Notwithstanding sporadic showers and the tenacity of some never-say-die enthusiasts, 14 members competed 18 ends, to be able to be called the winners of “The Wet One”! The winning team were Stan Long and his soggy team of Gavin Muir and Yvonne Hill. Unfortunately, Friday’s night bowls competition was cancelled because of the lovely rains in our area. To ensure the continuity of the competition stays on track, Mike Tomlinson, the competition organiser, has planned to have the third round of the competition played on Wednesday evening May 25.

After the rains on Thursday and Friday, Saturday turned out to be a gorgeous sunny day for bowling.

With beautifully prepared greens and clear skies, Port Alfred bowling club hosted the Eastern Areas men’s trips competition on Saturday afternoon (first round) and then two rounds on Sunday. Again, this competition drew the cream of the crop from Kowie, Port Alfred, Kenton and Albany bowling clubs. From the 14 teams that entered, the competition was divided into four different sections, on a 2 points for a win and the shot difference rules in place.*

All the teams set about winning their first rounds, which led to some top-class bowling, watched by a multitude of supporters from the different clubs.

After a hot cup of coffee and some fresh rusks provided by the host club, the second round started at 9am on Sunday. Again, all the teams played outstanding bowls, but as we all know, in every match, there has to be a loser. With some “underdog” teams bearing their teeth to the “better” sides, the third round of competition was played after lunch.

With too many brilliant individual plays of the day to mention, the following were the winners of the four sections:

Section 1: Heinrich Strombeck ’ s team from Port Alfred.’Runners up were Dave Thomas s team from Kowie.

Section 2: Steve Minnaar ’ s team of Michael vd Sandt and Lester Scriven from Kowie. Runners up were Allie Daniel’s and his team from Albany.

Section 3: Kallie Carlitz’s team from Albany. Runners up were

Jacques Krige’s team from Kowie. Section 4: Ron Orford’s team from Port Alfred. Runners up were Clive Bartlett’s team from Albany. The next round of the EA trips, which promises to be a humdinger of note, will be played on June 11 and 12.

Thanks to Kallie Carlitz and his able team of umpires for running a smooth, uninterrupted competition. Also to the Port Alfred bowling club and their entire team, for hosting yet another very successful 2 days of top class bowling. Well done to all you chaps!

Before closing this report, mention must be made of Megan Kriel, one of Kowie’s outstanding lady bowlers, who played in last week’s SA’s open singles national bowling competition. She ended in the top 16. Well done Megs. The club is very proud of you.

PORT ALFRED BOWLING AND CROQUET CLUB

Another busy weekend and week regarding bowls. This past weekend saw the first round of the Eastern Areas Trips being played at this club on Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday.

Thanks a ton to those members who helped prepare the greens on both days. Thanks for all you hard work, Christo, Neil, Fred and Martin. The hamburgers served on Sunday were delicious and many thanks to Collette who prepared them and her helpers in the kitchen. A last thanks also goes to John and Sue who had a busy time behind the bar.

Also, well done to Ron, Phil and Mike as well as Hein, Stewart and Brian for winning their sections. Both were unbeaten and will now play each other in the second round set for June 4th and 5th. The two other teams come from Albany and Kowie.

One final thank you to Neil and Trevor who have worked so hard to make our greens so enjoyable to play on. Many visiting players were heard complimented the B green over the weekend, On Tuesday this week, the semifinals of the mixed drawn trips was played followed by the ladies’ singles semi-finals and men’s senior singles final the next day where Gail played Julie and Rosemary played Lynda. Trevor squared up to Brian in their final. The results will be published next week.

Last week Tuesday, the Kekkel en Kraai-sponsored afternoon was played with Grumpy, Phil and Brian walking away with the winning vouchers. Many thanks to the sponsors once again. Then in the Timm and Vroom Cup, it was a big well done to both ladies’ teams, skipped by Lynda and Alzabe, who won against Kowie opposition while the Port Alfred men won one out of three. The winners were the three B’s, namely Ben, Boela and Bill. Good bowling to all.
