Up to a few years ago, York Street in Sunnyside was just another suburban thoroughfare, serving residents in the area, plus staff and patients heading for Fort England Hospital, as well as farmers making their way to their farms along the length of Belmont Valley.
In the pre-1970 years, the municipal pound and Mr WJ Jenner’s Belmont Dairy were situated just beyond the end of the tar on Belmont Road.
A few years ago the idea of building a golf course seven kilometres into the valley was mooted, and it was about seven years ago that Belmont Golf Club was established.
Not only is the facility used for golfing, it is also a popular venue for social gatherings such as 21st birthday parties, corporate promotions, meetings and cocktail functions.
But back to York Street. As the main entry into Belmont Valley and the golf club from town, it has become a very busy and bustling street. Despite a marked increase in traffic volumes, including delivery and service vehicles over the past number of years, York Street appears to have survived quite well.
There are the usual potholes, to be expected all over Makhanda, plus the Market Street/York Street intersection that is riddled with crumbling tar and potholes.
Something I remember about York Street back in the early to mid-1960s is that there was a smallholding with a doublestorey dwelling just off York Street, now residential properties. Can anybody confirm this?
Incidentally, readers may be interested to know that York Street was previously known as Barrack Street.
Visitors Desmond Mjimila and Zola Mgudwa were the winners of the Makana golf classic over the Belmont course and hosted by Makana Tourism, with Makhanda players Scott Jackson and Carl Bradfield runners-up. Third were Wayne Tammadge and Morne Herselman, fourth Gareth Shaw and Angus McCrae, and fifth N Mbabela and T Tsolekile.
