PORT ALFRED BOWLING CLUB

There was much joy at the club last Wednesday afternoon when the Port Alfred men’s A team were announced the winners of the Moore Shield competition played between Port Alfred, Kowie and Kenton.

Port Alfred came away with 10 points, followed by Kowie on eight and Kenton on six points. The Port Alfred women were not as lucky, with Kowie A emerging as winners. Well done to all those players who made themselves available.

On Tuesday last week, the tabs-in afternoon was sponsored by Personal Trust with Lenny Clarke, Fred Stowe and new bowler Hester Scheepers emerging as winners with Trevor Frost, Gail Webster and Joanne Ferreira in second place. Many thanks to Personal Trust.

The Port Alfred teams skipped by Trevor and Hein Strombeck after being given a bye on Saturday, travelled to Makhanda (Grahamstown) last Sunday to participate in the Eastern Areas Fours held at the Albany Bowling Club.

In their first game Trevor, Phil Taylor, Lenny Clarke and Bill Wragg had a massive 40something win against an Albany side, while Hein, Stuart McDougall, Christo Hattingh and Brian McLean also had a good win against a Kowie team. However, both teams fell short in their afternoon game played in cold and drizzle. Tough luck guys.

On Saturday, the Build Itsponsored Trips was won by Colin, Sheila and Gail with runners-up Rose, Beryl and Debbie. Many thanks to Build It for their generosity.

The quiz evening arranged by the Port Alfred Tennis Club turned out to be a major success with the clubhouse packed to the limit. The evening started off with the tennis club’s prize giving, followed by the quiz which ended just before 9pm due to load shedding.

Many thanks to all those who turned out to support. The next venture will a Bingo evening set for July 23, also at the bowls and croquet club.

To end, Hein, Stuart and Brian will soon be travelling to Jeffrey’s Bay to compete in the Eastern Province Trips after having emerged as Eastern Areas winners. The runnersup, Albany, will also be competing. Good bowling all.

KENTON BOWLING CLUB

The summer weather last* week brought the Kenton members on to the greens in droves.

Wednesday saw two ladies and two men's teams playing in the Colleen Timm competition and Moore Shield, respectively. The ladies won one and lost one match, scoring 2 points with a shot profit of -18. The men also won one and lost one match, scoring 2 points, with a shot profit of -15.

Wednesday and Saturday saw well attended tabs-in afternoons, while Thursday was the Kenton Spar sponsored trips afternoon. The winners of the Spar vouchers were Rodney Austin, Tony Phillips and Colin Armstrong. Upcoming events: Wednesday 13 July: Dias Insurance sponsored tabs-in Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 August: Kenton Bowling Club Personal Trust Mixed 4s Classic

KOWIE BOWLING CLUB

The week’s first tabs-in competition on Tuesday, 5 July wasn’t blessed. Yes, there were 28 players keen and eager to play but not too long into the afternoon the weather closed in with nice showers of rain that brought bowls to an early close. Of course, it meant a good 6mm of rain for the greens.

Wednesday saw the playing of the final round of the Moore Shield (men) and the Colleen Timm Cup (ladies) at the Port Alfred Bowling Club. While the two Kowie men s teams had performed very ’well in the preceding rounds, this wasn’t the case in the final round where the Kowie A team was beaten by Port Alfred and the B team by Kenton.

The Colleen Timm Cup was a different story, with the Kowie A team of Jackie Kriel, Wendy Heny, Linda May and Yvonne Hill taking the honours on the day. Well done, girls!

Thursday, 7 July, dawned clear, but despite our members enjoying the tabs-in competitions, we attracted only 12 players. Bragging rights were earned by Cyprian Guard, Debbie Slattery and Yvonne Hill with a good score of 24-12 in their match with John Hubbard, Ronel Hough and Lyn Allin.

The other trips game saw Dave Tyrrell, Bugs Wilmot and Louise Fleming pipping Lester Scriven, Lawrie May and Rose Bartlett by a single shot, 2120.

With the Club Singles Championships now underway there were also several of these games played on the day. Results will be provided in time.

Friday saw the playing of the ever popular Personal Trust Trips, and as normal ‘Mr Personal Trust Trips’, the likeable Carl Vermeulen, was in attendance to represent the sponsors and to present the prizes. Winner on the day was the team of Wendy Heny, Ronel Hough and Ruth Walker. Runners-up were Lester Scriven, Claire Bell and Ozzie Harbrecht. The members draw was won by Martin Slattery. Well done Martin! So our draw starts up again with R300.

Saturday attracted just 14 players – a game of fours and one of trips - and boasting rights were claimed by Michael van der Sandt, Piet Boshoff and Debbie Slattery.

The Club had representation in two out-oftown events in the time under consideration. First, both a men’s and ladies’ team played in the Oyster Festival in Knysna where the men ’ s side of Jonty Alexander, Pieter Stegmann, Peter May and Martin Slattery got 6th place in the plate event, and the ladies’ fours of Judy Alexander, Margaret Stegmann, Helise Hattingh and Megan Kriel, were placed in the top ten of the event. The second event was the Eastern Areas Men’s Fours played at the Albany Club in Makhanda on 9 and 10 July. It is pleasing to report that the teams skipped by Stephen Minnaar and Jacques Krige have gone through to next week’s final.
