Talk of the Town

Women have done it for years

-

Kirsten Penn of KC Italia is always there to ensure your dining experience is memorable. With a lot of work, the team of the authentic Italian restaurant has grown in success.

When asked about the role of women in society today, Penn had this to say: “I don’t necessarily believe the roles of women at home and in the workplace have changed significantly over the past few decades.

“Women have simply had to, or chosen to, focus on one side or the other, or head both aspects simultaneously.”

“This is certainly not a new thing. I think perhaps what’s maybe shifting is the acceptance, appreciation and accolades women are now receiving both locally and internationally for the efforts and work they have been putting in for some time already.

“Examples that come to mind are Jacinda Ardern [New Zealand’s prime minister, who often has baby on her lap during cabinet and other important meetings] and our very own superwoman Basetsana Kumalo [former Miss SA, Top Billing producer, community uplifter, and mom of three]. Women are now being celebrated more than ever for the roles they’ve been showing up for, for many years.”

How does technology assist you in your work?

Certainly communication devices and social media platforms have made a difference with regard to reservations, reviews and advertising.

Electronic bank transfers, cellphone banking and mobile card machines assist with payments.

What does your average day consist of in your business?

It depends on our bookings or functions. Mostly, it’s an early morning of shopping, followed by preparations for lunch and dinner. Planning for events, responding to emails, creating marketing collateral and advertising, taking reservations, staff rostering, serving lunch, serving dinner, cashing and closing up. Getting staff home safely… and starting again the next day.

Do you think the 15-year-old version of you would be proud of what you have achieved?

I think the words achieved and endured could be used interchangeably here. I think she’d be proud that I eventually learnt there’s no shame in asking for help when needed.

What would you say are your strongest personality traits that assist you in your work?

Perhaps that while I strongly believe we are all unique individuals, we all have some common link . . . which ties us together . . . opening up communication, and understanding.
