KENTON BOWLING CLUB

Wednesday was time for the monthly Continental Restaurant matches and we had a good turnout. The winners of the Continental vouchers were Tony Philips and Wendy Cloete who ended up playing a pairs match on the day.

On Thursday we hosted the next round of the Kowie/Kenton competition for the men and the Bess Tweedie matches for the ladies. Kenton came out on top in this round with the men winning 3 out of 4 matches and our ladies winning all 3 of theirs.

PT Trips on Friday took place on a cold windy afternoon and many would rather have stayed at home than been out on the rinks. Nevertheless we all had a good time in the end and we had a large crowd staying for the prize giving and draws. Overall winners this time were the team of Stompie Bellingan, Lydia Palmer and Ferdi Bergh and, of course, there were many winners in the prizes for the ends with Johan Grobler and his team of Mo Marsay and Esme Bergh getting a big carry over in the end. Perhaps it was the cold weather and squalls of icy rain that started to fall but we sold enough tickets to do two whisky draws that evening. The winners were Colin Armstrong and Lydia Palmer. I hope Lydia played the Lotto as her luck is definitely running for her at the moment. *

The PT Lockdown Meat draw was won by Jenny Adair and Ken Bern had his name drawn for the Joker draw. Unfortunately Ken missed the big one and had to be happy with the consolation prize.

It was a pleasure to welcome back one of our bowlers, Campbell Stewart-Watson, who is now permanently resident in Kenton. Bowls on Saturday was cancelled due to the rain

PORT ALFRED BOWLING AND CROQUET CLUB

After a busy Sunday when the Eastern Areas mini-districts trials were held at the Port Alfred Bowling and Croquet Club, there were smiles for Trevor Frost, Hein Strombeck and Brian McLean when they each made one of three sides to play in the minis to be held in Port Elizabeth from September 22-25.

Stuart McDougall, also a club member, was named as first reserve. Well done all. However, a great deal of thanks must go to Neil MacCullum for his hard work in preparing the greens and rinks, and also to Gail Webster and Grumpy Enslin for their preparing the hamburgers and also cleaning up.

Gail also helped on the green after the afternoon game collecting the markers along with Peter Wansell, then proceeded to throw a few woods with other new bowlers. Lastly, thanks also to Boela Burger for lighting the fire for the bring and braai and to Joanne Brown and Mike Pfotenhauer for being in charge of the bar.

Due to the rain which fell on Saturday, the Radue-sponsored afternoon was called off as was the dance evening, as musician Peter Drennan succumbed to Covid.

Earlier in the week, it was well done to HeinStrombeck, Bill Wragg and Nick Oosthuizen who were worthy winners of the men’s club’s drawn trips. They beat Brian, Jim Haswell and Fred Stowe in the final.

The ladies’ open singles which was to have been played between Lynda Schoning and Jenny Frost was postponed with Jen not feeling well. Not sure when the final will take place.

On Tuesday evening of this week, John Hodges was nominated as the new bowls president after Trevor stood down. Give it horns John. In the meantime, good bowling to all.

KOWIE BOWLING CLUB

Tuesday was like a family reunion at the club this week. It was as if the members hadn't seen each other for ages! In many cases this was true, as the rain storms and the flooding of the club premises did keep the majority of our members in the comfort of their homes over the past two weeks.

With the sun belting out its message of "all is right at the club again", Tuesday afternoon was again filled with much banter and some seriously good bowling. The tabs in competition was won by the "old" warhorse, Jackie Kriel and her team of David Tyrrell and PietBoshoff.

Wednesday saw the regular novice team having a whole lot of fun, as usual.

Thursday saw four men teams and three ladies teams playing against Kenton, in Kenton.

Kenton mauled our ladies into submission by making a clean sweep, winning all three of their games. With two points for a win, they ended up on 6 points with a shot difference of +15 on the day.

The progressive scores after four rounds of competition are Kenton with 16 points with a shot difference of +39, and Kowie on 8 points with a shot difference of 39.

Thanks to some splendid skipping by John Knepscheld and masterful play by his team of Dave Tyrrell, Gary Everton and Justin Louw, Kowie ended on 2 points with a shot difference of -2. Kenton reigned Supreme on the day and ended up on 6 points with a shot difference of + 2.

The progressive scores after 4 rounds of competition are Kowie on 20 points with a shot difference of +49. Kenton are on 12 points with a shot difference of -49.

The 5th round of competition against Kenton is on 13 October, at Kowie.

Due to further rainfall, no bowls were played on Saturday.

Kowie are very proud of three of our star bowlers, Jackie Kriel, Evie Swanepoel and Megan Kriel who were part of a Ladies Eastern Areas mini districts team that travelled up to Graaff-Reinet to play in the Mini Districts tournament over the weekend. Jackie's team of Marlene, Evie and Megan did extremely well, winning three out of the four games they played.

The two Eastern Areas ladies teams ended up as the gold medallists of the tournament. Well done!

Here are this week’s etiquette tips to ponder.

● Commend your team-mates and your opponents when they play good shots.

● Keep silent while others are delivering their bowl, and remain outside of their peripheral vision and line of sight.

● Never utter a negative comment on poor deliveries.
