KENTON BOWLING CLUB

We start off with the good news that the EP Mini Districts Ladies tournament that was played in Graaff-Reinet last weekend was won by Eastern Areas. The last time this had happened was in 2013. Our Lynn West was in the team and she thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Congratulations to all the team members.

On one of the hottest days of the year where the mercury was just over 34°C, Kenton had an away outing to Port Alfred Bowls Club for the penultimate round of the Les Clarke and Doris Ford competitions. Both our ladies teams won their matches and the men’s teams won two out of the four games with Kenton coming out on top on shot profit. The competition is heading for an exciting finale at Kenton as the overall points positions are close in the men’s section.

There were the usual bounce games on Friday afternoon followed by the evening social. The whisky draw was won by Allan Marais, the meat draw was won by Wendy Cloete and Colin Armstrong had his name drawn for the Joker draw but alas he had to be content with the consolation prize.

KOWIE BOWLING CLUB

Kowie had another full bowling programme to report on for the week which started on Tuesday with a “megabucs” tabs in competition.

With two teams on equal points after 18 ends, to be declared champions for the day, it was down to the two leads to see who could be closest to the jack. *

Because everyone had already packed their bowls away after the days play, the closest to the jack was done inside the club. With the jack placed about 10m from the mat, Ruth Walker won the toss and was first to deliver. Fortunately for her, the bowl made contact with a nearby bar stool and came to rest about 2 yards from the kitty. Leigh Evans, thinking this was going to be an easy win for his team, delivered his bowl which just ran and ran. The bowl eventually came to rest just outside of the ladies changing rooms! This resulted in Jack Wiid and his team of Martin Slattery and Ruth Walker being the winners for the day.

Wednesday saw two new faces join the novice clan. Welcome to Andre and Sophia van der Bank to the Kowie Bowling Club. With a little bit of polishing, these two are going to be a pair to contend with for sure.

Thursday was the Pam Golding sponsored competition.

Playing in lovely weather, the12 teams battled it out for the sponsored hampers which were up for grabs.

The winning team was Denny Richardson, Peter Ford and Gerald Mills. Second prize hampers were won by Bryan Burger, Peter Giblin and Yvonne Hill. Stan Long, Bugs Wilmot, Don Armstrong and Andrea Meyer won the third prize hampers.

Massive thanks to Andrew Meyer and his team from Pam Golding for his monthly sponsorship of this competition.

The Senior semi-final singles game between Jacques Krige and Dave Tyrrell was played on Friday afternoon, with Jacques going through to play the final against Bryan Burger next week.

With the rugby Test against Australia being played at 7.30am, Saturday saw a good turnout for tabs in. The winning team was Stan Long, Wendy Heny and Gill Armstrong.

Congratulations to the following Kowie members who have been selected to play in the Eastern Areas Men’s Mini Districts teams:

Jacques Krige, Jason Prince, Stephen Minnaar, Jonty Alexander and Lester Scriven.

Here are this week’s etiquette tips to ponder.

● Avoid wasting time arguing which is the shot bowl. If there is any doubt, get down and measure.

● Do not move any bowls until the shots have been decided, and do not touch any bowls until the end is completed.

● Do not leave the green by walking across another rink without first checking that it is clear to do so.

PORT ALFRED BOWLING CLUB

Following the club’s annual general meeting held last Tuesday, John Hodges became the new president, replacing Trevor Frost who stood down, while Christo Hattingh is the new men’s captain and Joanne Brown the new ladies captain.

Many thanks to all those who served the club so well for the past two years and many thanks to those who have agreed to stand.

There was a nice moment last Saturday when Ed (Edna) Slade handed over the money she had promised after she challenged the ladies open singles champion Lynda Schoning. The deal was she would pay for every end lost. Thanks for keeping your word Edna.

Winners of the Kekkel en Kraai-sponsored afternoon were Joan Jacobs, Elzabe Rodriguez and Edna. Well done. Elzabe and her husband Ricardo celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

This past Saturday in windy conditions, the Radue-sponsored afternoon was won by Julie Sluziuk, Helise Hattingh, Edna (Slade) and Arthur Beresford with Martin Leonard, Jaco van Niekerk, IlzeStrombeck and Gail Webster the runners-up.

While this was going on, the men’s open singles final between Brian McLean and Chris Avis took place with Brian emerging the winner in a tight clash. Well done.

Being played today at the Kowie BC is the Peg and Horace Purdon clash between beginner bowlers from Port Alfred and Kowie. The outcome will be reported next week.

Last week Wednesday, the second last round of the Doris Ford (ladies) and Les Clarke (men) competition was played with the two Port Alfred women’s team losing both, while the Port Alfred men won two and lost two. Heading into the final clash, Port Alfred led by only two points.
