KENTON BOWLING CLUB

It was time for the annual Buco Trips event last week and it was Kowie Bowling Club s turn to host

entered’two it. Each club men’s teams and a ladies’ team, with the idea being that all teams in a section play each other.

This event normally takes place on a Saturday afternoon and all Sunday, but conscious of the high cost of travelling these days the organisers scheduled it all to happen on the Sunday.

The men’s A section and the ladies played five matches each of two bowl trips over 12 ends, while the mens B section played three matches of three bowl trips over 15 ends.

Despite threatening rain and the occasional shower, a lovely day with lots of fun was had by all and I’m sure we will see more days in this format in the future.

We had a very good turnout on Wednesday for the Continental

Restaurant monthly competition played on A green.

The winners of the vouchers were Wickus van Schalkwyk, Sheila Walker, Peter Levey and Ian Edwards. Many thanks to Continental for their generous sponsorship.

PT Trips on Friday had 18 teams competing and it was good to see Carl Vermeulen again.

He made the most of his time here and his team of Ronel Hough and John Daly came away as winners on the day. The prizes for the various ends were won by a number of different teams, with a few nice carry-overs thrown in.

Fines master Kevin Sharp got his notebook out and unsuspecting bowlers were fined for their indiscretions over the past few weeks. Club captain Ivan Pachonick formally welcomed a number of our new bowlers into the club and presented them with the customary club cloths.

The Meat draw was won by Cecily Massart and the whisky draw was won by Lee Slater. Mike Palmer had his name drawn for the Joker but had to be content with the consolation prize.

In the meantime Ferdi Bergh had made a lovely fire in The Burnt End for those who were going to braai and enjoy the tasty potatoes that Sheila Walker had cooked for us.

KOWIE BOWLING CLUB

After some lovely rains this past week, our club’s greens are in pristine condition. They are running a bit quick for some, but what a pleasure to play on.

Tuesday was a lovely sunny day after overnight rains, and perfect for the tabs in competition* which was again generously sponsored by Graze by the River.

The deserved winners of the meal vouchers were none other than our club captain Jonty Alexander and his very talented team of Jason Prince and the new boy on the block, Jacques Moolman. This is Jacques’ first win at tabs in, and the smile on his face at prizegiving was priceless!

After two weeks of coaching by Wendy Heny, Wednesday morning saw Philip and Ann Gillfillan officially joining the novice group for their first informal game at the club. As usual, much fun was had by all, with Joy Altson having a great day on the greens.

There was a good turnout at Thursday’s tabs in which was played in lovely warm spring weather. The winners of the generously sponsored meal vouchers by Ocean Basket were Michael van de Sandt and his team of Lawrie May and Wendy Counihan.

A host of our top players were away, playing in different competitions in East London and Gqeberha over the weekend.

In Gqeberha, Stan Long, Jason Prince, Jonty Alexander, Jacques Krige, Lenny Clark, Stephen Minnaar and Lester Scriven all played in the Mini Districts competition.

At the end of play on Sunday, Eastern Areas were leading the log. However, the competition only ends on Monday at lunch time, so the final results will be published in next week’s report.

In East London, three teams entered the Seafood Extravaganza Mixed Fours Classic hosted by Morgan Bay. All our teams did well, with PieterStegmann’s team of Robbie Muzzell, Peter May and Megan Kriel coming fouth overall. Well done, you chaps. You make our club very proud. The seafood on the Saturday was absolutely delicious and such a treat.

Back at home, Saturday morning’s password at the club was “nougaanonsbraai”, because Saturday was Heritage Day, which for most of us means Braai Day!

Outside club activities did not stop 22 members who stayed “at home” and played in a 4-3-2-1 tabs in competition, which started at 11am with a bring and braai get-together afterwards.

After having plenty of fun in the sun, a lot of the players stayed to braai.

With most of her family in attendance, the highlight of the afternoon was the sharing of Ouma Lucia Nel’s birthday cake. After the braai, some stayed on at the club to watch the rugby. (Go Bokke!!)
