NSRI Open Day

- FAITH QINGA

Beach and ocean users enjoyed a window into the operations of the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Station 11 Port Alfred base when its committed volunteers hosted an Open Day on Saturday, October 1.

More than 1,300 volunteers across SA keep the NSRI going.

They are on call 24/7, ready to respond to water-related emergencies.

The Port Alfred NSRI crew were on hand to explain what they do and what it takes to become a volunteer.

Moored and on standby at the NSRI’s jetty was its rescue boat Lotto Challenger and members of the public lined up for a quick flip on the Kowie River.

Port Alfred’s NSRI station currently has 29 volunteers on board.

This aim of the Open Day was to inform residents of how the NSRI serves the community, and to hopefully inspire more volunteers to join.
