Talk of the Town

KENTON BOWLING CLUB B WLS BANTER

-

It has been much quieter on our greens this week but nevertheless lots of fun was had by those who did play. It was lovely being able to host two teams from Meadowridge Bowling Club who were touring the Eastern Cape.

They consisted of bowlers who had previously belonged to various Eastern Area clubs and had decided on a visit to the area to play bowls against teams from their old clubs. Unfortunately the weather did not play along but we were able to reschedule the planned matches from Thursday to Friday morning. The games were close and although Kenton won 3 of the 4 games, we only won by one shot overall.

Only the PT Meat Draw was done on Friday and the winner was Anthony Copeman. It was Social Saturday, sponsored once again by Robbys Ultra Liquor. Winners of the generous vouchers from Robbys were Mo Marsay and Archie Cannon.

Finally, another reminder to complete the matches still outstanding in the internal competitions. We only have two months left to complete the outstanding games before the endof-year prize giving.

KOWIE BOWLING CLUB

Due to the lovely widespread rains in the area, our greens were rested after being given a good soaking for most of this past week.

However, Saturday was a splendid sunny day for bowling, so, on freshly cut and rolled rinks on the “A” green, the members capitalised, and played a tabs in competition, generously sponsored by Rosehill Spar.

The winners of the vouchers were John Hubbard and his team of Lawrie May and the evergreen novice Ruth Walker, who has improved her game in leaps and bounds in the last three months.

Over the weekend, Jonty Alexander, Jacques Krige, Andrew Meyer and Dave Thomas played

in the popular Hofmeyr Classic on Friday and Saturday. There were 14 teams from far and wide, who all played 6 games of 16 ends over 2 days … all on just ONE green!

Playing in super spring sunshine, our Kowie team won 2, peeled 2, and lost 2 of their games. It was reported as being a wonderful weekend, with*

wonderful hospitality from wonderful people.

As was promised in last week’s report, here are the final results of the Mini Districts competition played at the Woods in Gqeberha last weekend. After a nailbiting finish to the competition, the Eastern Areas team were narrowly beaten into second place by the

PE and districts team. Of note is that Kowie BC had 7 of the 12 Eastern Areas players; Jacques, Lenny, Stan, Stephen, Jonty, Jason and Lester. Well done, you chaps.

PORT ALFRED BOWLING CLUB

There was a lovely moment last Friday when a group of bowlers from Meadowridge Bowling Club from Cape Town turned out for a game of tabs. They were well supported by club members and a great time was had by all.

Among the visitors were former Port Alfred Bowling Club members Noel and Maureen Hill. The group had spent a week in Kenton before their visit.

This past Saturday, the Ocean Basket-sponsored afternoon was held with Trevor Frost, Colin Barnard, Sheila Pearce and 10year-old Liam Strombeck emerging as winners. Well done.

The annual mini-districts held in Nelson Bandela Bay is done and dusted, with the three Eastern Areas teams ending second out of seven sub-districts. Play started last Friday with one game in the afternoon, two on Saturday, two on Sunday and one final game on Monday. Eastern Areas led from the start until the final day when all three of their teams were narrowly beaten. The event was won by Port Elizabeth and Districts with 7,00 points, followed by Eastern Areas on 6,67 points. It was a heart-breaking finish for the three teams who were well managed by Kenton’s Dave West, but well done on such a close finish. Frontier ended third, Ciskei fourth, North Eastern Districts fifth, East London subdistrict sixth and Midlands last.

Coming up this weekend will be the Kowie Men’s Classic and good bowling to the Port Alfred teams. Give it horns, boys. Word has it that a couple of bowling laws have changed, one of which is that a bowl heading to the ditch may no longer be stopped by a player. If it is stopped the game may be forfeited.

Then on Tuesday, October 11, the opening round of the club’s mixed drawn fours will be played. Please all add your names to the list on the board.
