MUSIC MAKERS
The Makana Community Orchestra gave their inaugural performance in the Cathedral of St Michael and St George in Makhanda on Sunday, November 13. The orchestra is made up of community members from across Makhanda and surrounding areas as far as Peddie. Young and old, scholars, students and professionals play alongside each other in what Rhodes University music department head and cofounder Dr Boudina McConnachie describes as “music for and by the town’s citizens”. The orchestra is intended to foster community belonging and opportunities for development through music. It’s open to anyone who plays an instrument at Grade 5 level or above.
Sunday’s well supported programme of light classical and movie music, conducted by Johan Pretorius, was all that it promised: a strong performance of accessible music in a happy, family friendly setting. Picture: SUE MACLENNAN
