Yes they can! Build it offers quality materials for building, maintenance
It’s all about customer experience. That includes the impressive themed aisles
When it comes to materials for maintaining or upgrading your home, don’t stint on quality. The manager of Build it in Port Alfred, Jean “Jorrie” Jordaan, shares his vision, along with some good ideas about DIY.
Build it Port Alfred has been under new management for five years, and in its current location for three.
If you wondered about the striking layout and design of the Build it complex at 76 Albany Road, and the easy-to-navigate displays of hardware and appliances, it’s no accident.
“The ‘Wow!’ factor is really important for us,” says Jordaan. “It’s part of our branding, our visibility. We’re trying to set the standard for that.”
But it’s not just about love at first sight. “You can be wearing a nice badge on the outside, but if that isn’t followed through with a good experience inside, it’s not worth a lot,” says Jorrie.
“That initial good impression needs to reflect throughout the store.”
It’s all about customer experience. That includes the impressive themed aisles – everything from bathrooms and gardens to paint and electrical – and the attitude of the store’s knowledgeable staff, some of whom have been hands-on in the hardware business for decades.
Build it Port Alfred caters for both contractors and DIYers. Their ranges cover materials for everything from a high-end sophisticated multistorey to a basic four walls and a roof.
But basic doesn’t (and never should) mean lower quality, Jorrie emphasises.
“Buying a lower quality product because it’s cheaper doesn’t actually save you money,” he says.
Paint is a good example.
“If you buy cheap paint, you may need two or three cans to cover an area, whereas a good-quality paint might have seen you through with only one.
“Buy a good quality product you know will last, and you’ll only have to do it once.”
Maintenance and upgrades are an investment in your asset, Jorrie points out.
“With a good quality product, you add value to your house.”
Your personal favourite DIY project? TOTT asked.
“Any DIY that I can get my family involved in,” Jorrie answers immediately.
“Sanding, painting (if you’re prepared to take that chance with kids!). Of course kids really love gardening.
“And teaching your kids how to change the washer on a tap to stop it leaking is a great way to teach them to save water.”
