MTN responds
MTN can confirm its network availability has been impacted in the area of Kleinemonde due to high levels of battery theft which has left this site without alternative power during bouts of load-shedding.
Network coverage is lost during load-shedding if batteries are not in place, and because of cases of the current serious scourge of vandalism, cable theft and diesel theft, the conditions remain a concern.
While we are focusing heavily on enhancing the resilience of the network with batteries and generators, we also invest significantly in infrastructure security to protect the batteries and other equipment that form part of our network infrastructure.
We cannot succeed without the support of the community. The consistent crime is untenable and we know this is deeply frustrating for our customers, as it is for MTN.
While we are aggressively rolling out batteries, we do call on the public to remain vigilant and to help us protect the equipment we have installed.
