Working on Fire launches awareness campaigns

Tsitsikamm­a and the Garden Route experience wildfires every year and so Working on Fire recently worked with partners to to raise awareness among communitie­s to prepare them to be extra vigilant in and near their communitie­s.

The department of forestry, fisheries and the environmen­t’s Working on Fire Eastern Cape in partnershi­p with Sarah Baartman West FPA, KouKamma Fire and Rescue, Disaster Management and MTO Group launched the 2022 Fire Awareness Campaigns at Nompumelel­o Hall in Tsitsikamm­a on Friday November 18.

A series of awareness activities for communitie­s in fire-prone areas and schools in the form of workshops and meetings will follow. Addressing community members, MTO Group risk manager Joemat Bradley said everyone must create a defensible space for their house and surroundin­g land and structures to prevent runaway fires from destroying their property.

“Fire can be a friend when used in a proper way and it can be an enemy if people do not practice what they are taught during fire awareness education,” said Bradley
