Working on Fire launches awareness campaigns
Tsitsikamma and the Garden Route experience wildfires every year and so Working on Fire recently worked with partners to to raise awareness among communities to prepare them to be extra vigilant in and near their communities.
The department of forestry, fisheries and the environment’s Working on Fire Eastern Cape in partnership with Sarah Baartman West FPA, KouKamma Fire and Rescue, Disaster Management and MTO Group launched the 2022 Fire Awareness Campaigns at Nompumelelo Hall in Tsitsikamma on Friday November 18.
A series of awareness activities for communities in fire-prone areas and schools in the form of workshops and meetings will follow. Addressing community members, MTO Group risk manager Joemat Bradley said everyone must create a defensible space for their house and surrounding land and structures to prevent runaway fires from destroying their property.
“Fire can be a friend when used in a proper way and it can be an enemy if people do not practice what they are taught during fire awareness education,” said Bradley
