BOWLS BANTER

KENTON BOWLING CLUB

This was the week of the Kenton Mixed Classic and it turned out to be a great success.

The weather played along, the greens were great and it was lovely seeing them filled with bowlers from other clubs once again.

There were teams from Jeffreys Bay, Walmer, Western Suburbs, Cradock, Bedford, Albany, Kowie, Morningside in Johannesburg and, of course, our sponsors Personal Trust.

It was lovely catching up with old friends and making new ones over the two days we had the pleasure of hosting them.

Each team played four matches over the two days and believe you me we saw it all, from runaway games to games decided on the last bowl.

In the end, it was the Albany team of Billy Krige, Clive Bartlett, Annemarie Calitz and Marlene Jacobs who beat the Kowie team of Jason Prince, Jonty Alexander, Judy Alexander and Ronel Hough by one point to take the top honours on the day.

Without naming them all, thanks must go to the KBC members who gave so much of their time and effort to make this event the success it was.

Friday saw the last PT trips event of the year take place and we had some bowlers from Kowie join us as we were a team short.

We finished playing just in time before it started to rain and the winners on the day were our visitors from Kowie John Knepscheld, Piet Boshoff and Rob Walker. There were the usual end prize winners and a braai with potatoes supplied by Neville Emslie was enjoyed by those who stayed afterwards.

The PT Meat Draw was won by Neville Green, who knows where to collect his prize, and Dave Wallace had his name drawn for the Joker, but alas he did not select it.

Three Kenton teams took part in the Albany Tip Top trips on Saturday with varying degrees of success. Nevertheless, they all had a good time and survived the Makhanda weather gods.

This week sees the final match of the Kenton/Kowie and Bess Tweedie competitions take place on Thursday in Kenton, so please check the boards and see if you’re playing in them.

KOWIE BOWLING CLUB

It was another bumper week to report on from the Kowie Bowling Club.

Due to a bunch of our members going through to play in the annual Kenton Classic, Tuesday’s tabs in attendance was a little thinner than usual.

After a super afternoon on the greens, the deserved winners of the Graze on the River-sponsored meal vouchers were Mike Tomlinson and his team of Dave Thomas, Ruth Walker and Lina Woodard.

On Tuesday morning, four teams from Kowie travelled to Kenton to play in the annual Kenton Classic.

With an early morning start, along with glorious weather, the teams went into full competetive mode, with some top-class bowling the order of the day.

As it is in two-day tournaments, there were overnight leaders, but as we all know it all boils down to the last day and the last end to determine who outplayed and outwitted the rest of the field.

With many games decided in the final ends, Wednesday saw the final games played out.

The eventual winners of the Kenton Classic was the team from Albany, Anne Marie Carlitz, Clive Bartlett, Billy Krige and Marlene Jacobs.

In second place was our very own Jason Prince and his team of Jonty and Judy Alexander and Ronel Hough.

Congratulations to all the other Kowie teams who participated and held the club’s flag flying high.

In lovely cool weather, Thursday saw the monthly Pam Golding sponsored trips played.

To give everyone a fair chance of being in a winning side, the name tabs were all drawn out of three different bags for each position in the team. One game of 18 ends was played.

Much fun was had by all but the teams that had the most fun were those that won the generously sponsored Pam Golding hampers.

Mike Tomlinson and his team of PeeWee Tomlinson and Uncle Don Armstrong were the winners of the day.

In second spot was Di Gruneberg, Lawrie May and Gerald Mills and third was John Hubbard, Rob Walker and Patrick Smith.

A big thanks to Annie Meyer who handed over the prizes and represented the sponsors from Pam Golding. Friday was a very good day for the team from Kowie who entered the Kenton Personal Trust Trips.

John Knepscheld, Piet Boshoff and Rob Walker smashed the rest of the 17 sides and walked away winners of the day. Congratulations guys, you make us all proud.

On Saturday morning, five teams from Kowie travelled up to Makhanda to play in the Albany Bowling Club Tip Top Trips competition, where three games were played during the course of the day.

There was fierce competition between the 24 teams during the morning session, and even more in the afternoon.

On the day, the winners were Marcelle Burgess and his team from Albany.

In second place was Jonty Alexander, Debbie Slattery and Andrea Meyer from Kowie. Well done to all our club members who participated and supported the hosts, Albany Bowling Club.

PORT ALFRED BOWLING CLUB

It was off to Makhanda (Grahamstown) this past Saturday for three teams from Port Alfred to compete in the Albany Bowling Club’s Tip Top-sponsored day.

The teams were Trevor (skip), Jen and Henry, Hein (skip), Anna and Mike, as well as Brian (skip), Mary and Dave Roberston of the Albany club, a relative of Brian and Mary.

It proved a lovely tournament, though the weather could have been somewhat better in the morning.

Neither of the Port Alfred teams ended within the top five but with each side winning a prize, Trevor walked away with three six-packs, Brian with three bottles of wine and Hein, ironically, with three packs of biltong. Many thanks Albany for a well-supported event.

The Radue-sponsored tabs-in afternoon on Saturday was held over to Tuesday this week when a number of outsiders rocked up to celebrate a birthday party and wanting to play bowls.

After being given permission to drink on the green, the bar was left wondering if it would run out of stock, according to club president John Hodges.

On Tuesday this week, the bowls prize-giving was held with all the winners to be named in the next edition.

Coming up this weekend is the Eastern Areas Champ of Champ Singles to be held at the Kowie Bowls Club.

All the winners of the various club open singles will face-off, so keep Port Alfred winner Brian McLean in your prayers. Play starts on Saturday afternoon with the rest played on Sunday morning, followed by many beers, prize-giving and lunch. Good bowling to all.

Lastly, the Port Alfred Annual Mixed Classic is just around the corner with more entries needed. Please enter all.*
