Dog control is everyone’s responsibility

- Ndlambe Municipal Management

The brutal death of Zimkhitha “Brenda” Gaga from Port Alfred, who was allegedly attacked by tPhOreeBpoitxb2u8lls7o1,n PSuonrtdaAylfred

— November 27, has come as a shock to the municipality.

We express our sincere condolences to her family.

The matter is under investigation by the South African Police Service.

We want to reiterate the statement we placed in last week’s Talk of the Town edition (November 24) and would also like to bring to the attention of the greater community the following provisions in the Ndlambe Municipality’s Public Nuisance and Keeping of Animals Bylaw, which states:

Section 14, number of dogs and cats:

Subject to the provisions of section 15, no person may, without the permission of the municipality, keep on any premises

(a) more than two dogs; and (b) more than two cats. Section 19, dogs or cats in public places:

The owner or keeper of a dog or cat may not bring or injury to a person outside the allow it in a street or public premises on which such dog is place (including parks and kept; or to be a source of danger orbea-cmhaesi)l utonlehsosuthzetdj@ogtaislkoonftahetowtone.cmop.zloayees of the leash and under the physical municipality entering such control of a responsible person. premises for the purpose of

This is a criminal offence and will not be tolerated. Failure to do so will lead to prosecution.

The safety of the public (and animals) is of utmost importance to the municipality.

There is also a marked increase in people taking their dogs to beaches and river banks and letting them run freely.

This is not acceptable and must be refrained from immediately. Ignorance of the law is not an excuse.

Ndlambe Municipality relies on the community to be our “eyes and ears” and to report immediately (with as much factual information) to our Bylaw Compliance Officer, Sipho Velezantzi on cell: 0734215708 or after hours to the Fire & Emergency Control Room in Port Alfred on 046-624-1111 or 046-604-5525: Stray dogs or dogs running freely; people who do not keep their dogs on a leash when necessary; properties with dogs that are not suitably fenced/secured
