Real donkeys and horses will form part of the cast for The Christmas Story and Carols by Candlelight on Wednesday December 21 at the Bathurst Showgrounds.

Directed by Corinne Willoughby and Lourens Orsmond, the uniquely local version of this special tradition is hosted by the Bathurst Agricultural Society in conjunction with Sunshine Coast Hospice.

The performance depicts the Nativity journey, with local horses and donkeys forming part of the cast and traditional lessons and carols included along the way.

An array of delicious food from charity stalls will be available.

“Bring your picnic baskets. Some food is available such as curry and rice, boerewors rolls and homemade biscuits, and you can end it all with an ice cream.

“The BAS bar will only sell beer, wine and ciders. Cold drinks will also be available,” Bathurst Agricultural Society (BAS) president Neil Scott said.

Although the event is presented by the Bathurst Agricultural Society, it is a charity event and charities that have not yet booked a (free) stand can contact Scott on his cellphone number 083-4420517.

“This function is the forerunner to the turning on of the Tree of Light which takes place on December 22 at the Port Alfred Hospital from 7pm.

“The exciting news is that when the Tree of Light is switched on to shine in glory in remembrance of our loved ones, the daughter Tree will be switched on in Bathurst, spreading the cheer even further. Cards can be obtained from Hospice at the Carol service for both trees,” Scott said.

Executive committee member Chrissie Craddock said entrance was free and candles were available in return for a donation to Hospice. The stalls will provide good things to eat to raise funds for each church or charity.

“The BAS Bar will be open for those who would like to buy a drink.”

The performance of the Christmas Story will be held in the beautiful tree-lined main arena at Bathurst Showgrounds.

Gates open for picnics at 5pm and the event starts at 6.30pm.
