KENTON BOWLING CLUB

The highlight of the week was the final Kenton/Kowie and Bess Tweedie matches of this year held at Kenton on Thursday afternoon.

The Kowie men beat Kenton on the day and took home the annual trophy again.

Our ladies team, however, did just the opposite by winning on the day and retaining the Bess Tweedie trophy.

Congratulations to the winners and special thanks to all who have played in these matches throughout the year.

We always enjoy getting together and playing other clubs in the Eastern Areas and competitions like this go a long way in raising the standard of all our bowlers.

A small group got together at the club on Friday afternoon. The PT Meat Draw, the only draw done, was won by Anthony Copeman.

Copey, Rodney Austin, Kevin Bates and Dave West are away this weekend, competing in the Cathcart annual classic.

This weekend also saw the Eastern Areas Champion of Champions games taking place at the Kowie Bowls Club.

Information just received says the ladies champion for 2022 is Jenny Frost and Jason Prince is the new men's champion.

Paul Brand represented Kenton as our open champion, while Mo Marsay, our ladies champion, was unfortunately unable to attend this weekend.

KOWIE BOWLING CLUB

As per norm, our week of bowling started on Tuesday afternoon with a tabs in competition, generously sponsored by Ocean Basket.

With two teams ending on the same score, it was back to the greens for the two leads for a sudden death bowl out.

Jacques Moolman beat Leon Evans and ensured his team of Mike Tomlinson and Piet (Skiet) Boshoff took home the meal vouchers.

Wednesday novice session saw the return of our two newest members, Phil and Ann Gilfillan after a short break.

One can confidently say these two, together with Mary Wade, will soon be joining the “big guns“at tabs in.

Thursday saw four mens and three ladies teams travel to Kenton to play in the sixth and final round of the Kowie vs Kenton and Bess Tweedie competitions.

Playing in hot weather, on wellprepared greens, the mens team won three of their four games, with the one game lost by two shots on the last end.

On the day, Kowie ended on six points with a shot difference of +17.

The final results after six rounds of competition, which started way back in the first week of March this year, is that Kowie take home the Silverware on 30 points with a convincing shot difference of +88.

Kenton ended on 18 points with a shot difference of -88. To stay in contention for the Tweedie Cup, Kowie had to win all three of their games convincingly. Unfortunately, the Kenton ladies proved just too strong for our ladies on the day, and won all three of their games, ending on six points with a shot difference of +39. With no points on the day, our ladies ended on a shot difference of -39.

The clean sweep culminated in the Kenton ladies winning the Bess Tweedie Cup on 22 points with a shot difference of +43. Kowie ended on 14 points with a shot difference of -43. Well done!

The afternoon ended on a high note, with Neville Emslie, the convenor for the day, congratulating the winners and thanking all who helped make the competition a huge success.

Playing in overcast weather, Saturday afternoon saw the Eastern Areas Champion of Champions held at our club.

After some tightly contested games, the first round results were:

Jason Prince from Kowie beat Paul Brand from Kenton.

TJ McClean from Albany beat Brian McClean from Port Alfred.

Jenny Frost from Port Alfred beat Judy Alexander from Kowie.

The second round of competition resumed at 9am on Sunday in overcast weather, with intermittent drizzle.

After eight ends, there was a 30minute break due to a short downpour of rain, after which play resumed.

The second round results were: TJ McClean beat Paul Brand.

Judy Alexander beat Gwen Bartlett and Jason Prince narrowly beat Brian McClean in a humdinger of a game.

Due to the rain delay, the third and final round got off to a late start.

The players soon adapted to the heavier conditions of the greens and the large group of supporters from all the different clubs were treated to some brilliant bowling.

The final results of the ladies competition were:

Jenny Frost beat Gwen Bartlett, with Jenny winning the Lady Eastern Areas Champion of Champions title.

Silver went to Judy Alexander, who beat Gwen Bartlett into bronze position.

In the finals of the men’s competition, Jason Prince beat TJ McClean quite convincingly, making Jason the men’s Eastern Areas Champion of Champions. Silver went to TJ, and bronze to Paul Brand, who beat Brian McLean.

After the lunch break and prize-giving, Judy Alexander, the president of Eastern Areas, thanked the committee for all their hard work. She thanked Christa von Gericke and her team, Stephen Minnaar and his team, Michael van de Sandt, Kallie Calitz and his team of umpires, the Kowie markets, and all the competitors.

Well done, Jason and Judy, Kowie is proud of you!

PORT ALFRED BOWLING CLUB

It’s a huge well done to Jenny Frost for being crowned the ladies’ singles winner in the Champ of Champions played this past weekend at the Kowie Bowling Club.

Having beaten Kowie’s Judy Alexander in her first game on Saturday afternoon, Jenny returned on Sunday to take on Albany’s talented Gwen Bartlett, who she also beat.

Though he lost all three, Port Alfred’s men’s singles champion Brian McLean did not disgrace himself and came close to beating the eventual winner, Jason Prince, who beat TJ McLean of Albany in the final. Well done, Jason, hard luck TJ.

At the prize-giving, all those bowlers who achieved playing in Eastern Areas and Eastern Province competitions were again honoured, among them Hein Strombeck, Stuart McDougall and Brian.

Hein was runner-up in the EP singles and was also with Stuart and Brian who won both the Eastern Areas Trips as well as the EP Trips.

The club’s prize-giving was recently held with trophies going to both men and lady bowlers, as well as the club’s croquet players. Individual prizes were also handed to those bowlers who served the club so well during the year.

The Radue-sponsored tabs-in afternoon was held on Saturday with the main prize going to visiting bowler from Kowie, Jackie Kriel, Christo Hattingh, Bill Wragg and Ann-Marie Giblin. In second place were Peter Giblin, Anna Strombeck and Yvonne Surtees. Well done to all and thanks once again to Radue’s.

Lastly, the club’s annual mixed classic is on this weekend.*
