KGB RESULTS August 29

The promise of warm weather and a light easterly wind was realised for the 29 players into the draw as they contested an stableford alliance two-scores-to-count in three three-balls and five four-balls, with a possibility of a bonus point for a “sandy”, a par from a bunker. Enjoying the extremely favourable conditions, Russell Warren, Peter Reed, Michael Collins and Derick van Harmelen outstripped all challengers to post 93 points in first place.

A distance behind, in their rear mirrors, two three-balls comprising John Crandon, Neil Loundar and Tom Tagg along with Andy Manson, James Lobban and Henry Ellis shared second place on 89 (84+5) points. Normally 82 points would have been safe but Dave Curran, Peter Longhurst and Nick Oosthuizen (77+5) managed to contrive to share the Hamer & Sukkel with Keith Buttemer, Don Thomson, Keith Rugg and Andy Barnes, as neither covey realised their potential. Henry Ellis and Eugene Erasmus both birdied the par-three eighth hole and, as no other birdies were recorded on the par threes, the two-club pool carried over. Henry Ellis and Russell Warren shared honours for player of the day with individual 68 netts.

September 1

A switch in conditions after the Indian summer weather of the past few days saw a chilly morning, fresh north westerly wind and a drizzle greet the 36 players drawn in nine four-balls to contest an stableford alliance two-scores-tocount on the par threes and fours and three-scores-to-count on the par fives. An additional point was available for a “Portuguese”, three three pointers or better in a covey on a hole as well as a “sandy” ,a par from a bunker, garnered an extra point as is now standard in KGB competitions.

The wet weather eased, with glimpses of sunlight, as Dave Curran, Russell Warren, Nick Oosthuizen and Peter Sinclair combined well to finish in first place on 94 points. James Lobban, Mike Stadler, Mike Krige and Fanie Smit came home with 92 points to finish second.

Not able to navigate the initial overhead gloom Lawrence Schultz, Andy Stembridge, John Ralph and Brian Reid found that 82 points was enough to secure their demise and ownership of the Hamer & Sukkel at prize-giving. No birdies were recorded on the par threes and the two-club pool carried over for a second time. Nick Oosthuizen shot an excellent individual 69 nett and Fanie Smit with an individual 68 nett returned as player of the day.
