PORT ALFRED

Once again a lot of bowls is to be played this week.

On Tuesday, it was tabs-in followed by the second round of the club’s open singles set for yesterday. Today, Thursday, sees the final round of the Doris Ford and Les Clarke competition against Kenton being played at this club.

The event was to be played earlier but with bad weather on the horizon, it was postponed to a suitable date.

As if that’s not enough, two men’s sides travel to Makhanda to play in the Whiteside competition set for Saturday and Sunday.

Then don’t forget the men’s mini-districts scheduled for September 22-25.

Played last Tuesday was the Build it-sponsored day with the team skipped by Jaco van Rensburg and Martin Leonard and Sheila Pearce emerging the winners, while Peet van Rooyen (skip), Shar Coleman and Mike Pfotenhauer were the runners-up.

Last Saturday saw teams playing in the Radue-sponsored afternoon with Trevor Frost (skip) Gail Webster and Rory MasonJones walking away with the winning vouchers, while Boela

Burger (skip), Sheila Pearce and Robin Collette placed second. Many thanks to both sponsors.

When it comes to the second round of the club’s open singles, Ron Orford plays Peter Wansel, with Brian McLean down to play the winner. In the other game, Hein Strombeck comes up against Phil Taylor.

When it comes to the ladies, Jenny Frost plays Joanne Brown in the final. Good bowling to all.

KENTON

Sunny and windless conditions brought out many bowlers from their winter hibernation.

Tuesday afternoon practise saw the ‘A’ green filled with bowlers honing their skills.

Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday tabs-in were equally well attended but with no internal competitions held, there were no winners to report.

Friday saw the usual bounce games augmented by an inaugural game of bowls cricket. This entertaining format of the game is used by BSA to improve control of both line and especially length.

The mornings featured the penultimate matches of the Club Championships.

Some hard- fought games were a feature of this annual event*

with only the finals in the men ’ s and ladies’ still to be contested.

On a serious and sad note, we mark the passing of well-known and stalwart club member Bill Bedford.

Bill, who was a talented allround sportsman, only started playing bowls late in life at the insistence of Rob Croly. He quickly became one of the best leads the Kenton Club has ever had and the honours board bears testimony to his successes in championships at the club and Eastern Areas level. His prowess as a player and an administrator was only matched by his skill as a rock fisherman, about which he is attributed to have said: “When you know where the fish are, you never have to cast more than 30m to pull one out.”

Our heartfelt condolences to his friends and family.

KOWIE

Tuesday afternoon’s tabs in competition was well-supported, with the balance of the members playing in the club pairs competition on the adjacent rinks.

Because the latter competition is in its infancy, the results will only be published fortnightly.

The winners of the tabs-in meal vouchers generously sponsored by Niche were deservedly won by Lenny Clark and his team of Martin Slattery and Lina Woodard.

Two new members were welcomed to the weekly Wednesday morning novice session, namely Craig Gibson and

Dolores Johnson. Both newcomers started off at their “new” club on a rather high note.

Thursday’s turnout for the Pam Golding sponsored afternoon was again well- supported. With the teams randomly picked out of three different bags (positional), it got under way in cool, overcast weather, perfect for good bowling.

The winning team of the huge hampers were the pairs team of Judy Alexander and Bugs Wilmot. The runners-up were Pieter Stegmann, Debbie Slattery, and Colleen Davy. Taking third spot was Andrew Meyer’s team of the hugely talented Vonnie Hill and Marion Walwyn.

After thanking the Pam Golding team for their continued generous sponsorship, the Kowie BC held their AGM.

After a comprehensive annual report, president Judy Alexander congratulated the following members for their achievements:

Ladies Novice winner: Vonnie Hill

Men’s Novice winner: Justin Louw

Men’s Open champion: Andrew Meyer.

Ladies Open champion: Evie Swanepoel.

Andrew Meyer also received the Jean Louw award, which is presented to a member who goes over and above his call of duty at the club. Well-deserved.

An incident worth mentioning after the prize-giving was the ovation received by Roy Wilkins, who was awarded an Honorary Life membership award for his unwavering work for the club.

Judy, who was re-elected as club president for 2024, thanked all for attending the meeting and those who brought the great eats.

Saturday morning saw Stan Long and his trips team of Denny Richardson and Lenny Clark, as well as Jackie Kriel and Judy Alexander’s trips teams driving to Gqeberha for the play-offs of the EP trips finals. For the record, Paul Spriggs from Westview beat Marcelle Burgess from Albany 1614 to take gold. Marcelle’s team won silver, and Stan’s Kowie team won bronze. Well done all.

Saturday afternoon was another fruitful day of bowling at our 101year-old club, where the winning team of Jacques Krige, Mike Ryan, and Sheena Warren walked away with the generously sponsored SPAR vouchers.
