The hope of playing golf in spite of overcast skies with clouds hanging heavy with moisture saw 22 players drawn in two 3-balls and four 4-balls to contest an Alliance Stableford 2-scores-to-count with the standard bonus point available for a “sandy”, a par from a bunker.
Hope dissipated as the heavens opened during the first two holes and most were drenched to the skin resulting in withdrawals ranging from the first hole of play till the ninth, until all retired. The competition was called off as players sought the showers and 19th for warmth and fellowship. Friday September 8
A warm day enticed 38 players to be drawn in two 3-balls and eight 4-balls to contest an Alliance Stableford 2-scores-to-count with an additional point available for a “sandy”, a par from a bunker.
John Crandon, John Ralph, Maureen McGarvie and Paul Fryer combined well to secure first place, overcoming the challenge of greens in variable stages of spring treatment, on 92 points.
Brian Shirley, Russell Warren, Andy Barnes and Dave Curran came home on 89 points to finish second. Shrugging off close competition, Bob Shaw, Mike Stadler, Heinz Czepluch and Tom Tagg on 79 points, later took ownership of the Hamer & Sukkel.
The excellent golfing conditions were countered by the difficulty on the greens and Nick Oosthuizen with an individual 69 nett and player of the day Donald McGarvie with an individual 68 nett were the only players to take full advantage of scoring potential.
Ricky Barresi, consistent as ever, shot an individual 77 gross.
